--Shading my sketches really helped me with figuring out thinking in 3d, and if you just want to sketch you can even use a waterbrush like it's a brushpen. I'm honestly amazed noone seems to want to use watercolors, given how much you can do with them.

--if you just want to experiment doing it in a sketchbook is perfect, since you won't feel like you'tre wasting paper or that you have to make something finished.

--I managed to find a sketchbook with 180 gram/meter paper, which was a lot cheaper than real watercolor paper.
