--sure, nothing wrong about that!
04 Aug 23:53
--True true :) But atm I have the feeling I need to referenes to get an understanding. TO be able to create my own I need to study a lot more anatomy and learning to manipulate that
04 Aug 23:53
--the only problem is that you cant get those 2nd hand experiences out of your head so easily, you have to unlearn them consciously. it's like when ppl drew manga all the time when they were kids and find out how limited that is and then have to unlearn the style to become an individual again
04 Aug 23:51
--fantasy is such a good example, there has so much circulation of imagery that a lot of "fantasy" is actually pretty set in stone. everyone knows exactly what a dragon looks like or an elf or a dwarf but if you just take the idea and come up with something based on your own experience it'll look completely different from that cookie cutter fantasy thats online everywhere
04 Aug 23:49
--Yeah, I do see a challenge into getting a fantasy feel to the works.. or maybe not the feel but if you need elves/gnomes whatever not .
04 Aug 23:49
--or so much of artstation; - people are looking at the stuff that gets a ton of likes and they copy that because they think thats the way to do it. it's mind incest
04 Aug 23:47
--people who dont do that may get great technically but they'll never have their own flavor. its the reason why japanese otaku culture exists, artists sitting at home looking at mass media and reproducing what they see without making any original experiences
04 Aug 23:46
--its a way to step out of the matrix, become a human being and see the world with your own eyes
04 Aug 23:45
--Haha :D I agree with your rant. And I think it would even work better for vacation picture/situations that have a special meaning to you. It can give an additional layer to your picture
04 Aug 23:44
--because you generate memories that way and photos from others dont have memories attached to them for you. your mind uses the memories it has to understand them and to fill the gaps but its never an actual experience. it's a hyperreality where your experience of whats real depends on something else thats referencing something else, in short the reality crisis of the postmodern world.
04 Aug 23:40
--yeah in that regard, if it's for a job and you really need to paint something specific that you dont have access to or you dont have the time to go there and look at it yourself, ofc use google 100%. i was just saying if he has the opportunity to shoot his own ref he's going to get far more out of them than if he used photos made by other people
04 Aug 23:36
--im not trying to simulate job offers with it, the goal is to make people come up with something on their own instead of depending on someone to hand a brief to you
04 Aug 23:36
--Actually I was targeting the challenge, but more of the question Zombie asked about reference.
04 Aug 23:34
--the challenge is just a little playground where you have to try a different approach
04 Aug 23:33
--That's what I was targeting, if it's a personal project, you have more possibility/what you can explore.
04 Aug 23:32
--And they want a realistic tank whatsoever, you will still use that "generic tank" from google,
04 Aug 23:32
--if by any chance you receive a project, and you have a deadline to complete it in 2 days or even 3 days,
04 Aug 23:31
--instead of gooling stuff thats automatically cool, look for something real you can present in a cool way or combine with other things to make something up. it's a way to force you to do some problem solving. art isnt about googling the first thing that comes to mind or to look for easy solutions. it's about working with your own taste and your own perspective on things. if you use images and influences from other people all the time, there's no way you'll do something unique to you.
04 Aug 23:26
--that's the point. you don't need to have everything in the world at your fingertips. work within the limitations and find creative solutions for where you want to go beyond. you might not even know what a tank is without mass media - rely on what you have at your disposal for now and you're automatically doing something unique. there is no creativity without limitations.
