For me personally, anything at all in the way of studies that included a number of things to do wasn't helpful. Someone else might be different, but I tend to lose sight of the goal

Anyway, sounds like you've got a good approach going right now, man

Olooriel

yeah I know...

I'm not saying that you're not saying it's not helpful ;)

Copying certainly helped my observational skills, though, haha :D

Absolutely.

not when you copy something perfectly

a study is a study when you do it to gain knowledge from it

True, but you said master value studies, not thumbnail XD

29 Aug 05:27

Olooriel

--

not necessarily, depends what they are. They could be value thumbnails

My goal I set for myself was to draw 88 referenced hand/arm studies and 88 memory/imagination hand/arm studies in a month. It's definitely realistic, because I'm going to beat my goal by a few weeks, probably.

Yeaah.. Drawing master value studies takes a lot of time, anyway. 50 in a week sounds like it'd be pretty sloppy :D

29 Aug 04:53

Olooriel

this current approach feels more natural and intuitive to me than, say "I want to draw 50 master value studies this week" - because I will start to hate those when I reach the tenth one, and long to do something else, and at that point I'd just be spinning my wheels trying to hit that magical number rather than the understanding it's supposed to give me, which is the whole point after all

drawing for a specified number of hours a day or with a timetable of subjects I still find hard to stick with though :(

29 Aug 04:48

Olooriel

I'm probably not the best person to ask, but the first one that really helped me was "draw every day", easy enough to stick with, extremely helpful for forming a habit. The current one I'm going with that seems to help me is a) pick a weakness b) think of several study approaches, courses or books that address this particular weakness, c) stick with those focused studies for a month, adjust studies if needed, d) re-evaluate whether another weakness seems more urgent for the next month, repeat

Olooriel, if you're still here, what are some things you have done in regards to goals that aided you well? Just wondering what kind of approach you went with it.

what is an "artists statement"?

29 Aug 02:16

Brian Hermelijn

I believe, jake parker also talked about the artists statement stuff.

And then build a goal system towards the system, or that makes you consistently get closer to the statement.

Such as Artists statemnt from what Stefan Brauman said,

But experimenting with different approaches to see what works and what doesn't

29 Aug 02:15

Jan Kloidt

my short term goals are like "study 6h each day this week", my mid term goals are "be a mtg illustrator in 3 years" and my long term goals are like "be as good as jaime one day"

29 Aug 02:15

Olooriel

How many hours do you study in a day, Jan?

29 Aug 02:14

Olooriel

you never arrive...

29 Aug 02:14

short term goals are usually easier to meet, unless you expect too much in a short time

Like the feeling of "I have arrived"
