Since we're talking about the process of building thick skin, accepting critiques as they're instead of fighting them etc.

29 Aug 01:14

Brian Hermelijn

I think that's why I got confused, haha.

“I had to look up reference material of people being hung, to accurately convey the physicality of the action. And after a day of watching people being hung, I was definitely affected. I pretty much just shut down emotionally, not really talking to coworkers or my wife,” he recalls. “I wouldn’t say it had any long-term psychological toll once I finished the sequence, [but] it certainly makes me less willing to empathize with the victims of takedown animations since." <-- game animator

easiest way to build a thick skin is to agree. if they say it sucks thats impolite and not constructive but they usually are still right. don't fight it, just do better next time and don't get too attached to your work. also throwing away things you put effort in every now and then trains you to not value your stuff too highly. at least thats how i do it

29 Aug 00:41

Brian Hermelijn

But yeah, as much we receive critiques/comments in our sketchbook, in the end, the decision remains on the artist whether or not the critique is valuable :)

29 Aug 00:40

Yeah building thick skin is tough.

saw this article pop up on facebook yesterday. good writeup of what kind of future you are working towards if you don't aim to create your own job as independent creator http://www.lindsredding.com/2012/03/11/a...rspective/ also really well written

Falls back onto yesterday's 'Artists who are Asshats' discussion. They don't deserve the recognition, and you've no obligation to them.

Some people don't like the idea that they have to work for the gains and that's what set him off.

Aaayy sorry Punk, I've been awol today and just saw the comments. Honestly, ignore the guy. Most people create forum posts to shout their opinion more than invite discussion. By challenging it he went around it to get to you. The irony about the talk of 'professionalism' is anyone seeing him talk to people that way aren't going to want anything to do with him.

sorry to hear that you got a nasty comment, you've been working so hard on that comic... some people seem to think that if you're not a master straight out of the box, then you're not worthy to even try - I cant help but think it's because they've already given up on their goal, whatever it was, because they thought they wouldn't make it
