--I think the sense behind it was keeping the group small so that we all had the same attention, no one was overlooked. The user mentioned is known for being harsh. But, I don't know about others, I had a few surprises in life to throw my schedule out of whack.

--Critique-and-study. I'm part of the founding group we started off ok with the idea of a small group and set assignments, and allocating a place for constructive critiques. The main user behind approving members was pretty blunt when it came to people being either beginners or unable to commit to deadlines.
