My drawing still needs work but with a decent base my work was pretty damn good. He became very snobbish about it and in the end instead of battling it was just a matter of us leaving a comment saying how fun it was to be a part of it and how disappointing that the higher powers let it fall... And unfollow and ignore that guy's existence.

Yep. The fact that it's become such a broad profession that you can go years never knowing a person exists, helps. My turning point was working for free on a project and a really great talented artist lent his sketches which I cleaned up shaded and coloured for a card game. The project fell through, he removed credit for myself and two others and submitted as his work.

I figure, all the people who spend their energy putting others down in ten years time will still be doing that, and those who have just worked and not worried about it will be the ones doing the good work *shrugs* I'm overly sensitive, but I'm damned well not going to stop doing art because of someone else's opinion ever again, I did once and have regretted it forever

Sometimes they think the opposite. They see that they're having an affect of someone and it gives them power. The base line ends up being that whatever someone half the world away says online is of no consequence. They can't reach through the screen and do anything. The only way to give them power is to let them have it.

I think the internet allows people to divorce from the fact they are talking to real people with feelings.. I try to never forget that there is a person on the other end I can empathise with. But yeah, you're right, people should be called on it to stop perpetuating the behaviour as being acceptable

Because it's essentially extending that chain that someone was a dick to them and they've assimilated that belief that the only way to be better is to be a douche.

Oh I don't bring people down. I've been either targeted or reeled in by trolls publicly but have ended up with them in PM's all chummy. Call it manipulative but teaching someone a lesson is more involved than TYPING LOUDER than they do.

true.. I get mad as hell when they do it to the kids on the site, but I'm an adult, I can take the shit, it just get you to start wondering what the frig I did to get that kind of response

27 Aug 09:03

That's still out of line, because regardless of whether or not you're better or worse, that behaviour is essentially picking on the weak to bring themselves up.

naw, I have no need for pulling anyone else down, if they go around making nasty comments at others then I feel like they must already have some issues.. why add to them

And people being an asshat about it is an open challenge for me.

Nope.. it was unsolicited as well.. maybe I come across arrogant or something and they feel I need to be knocked back, I honestly don't know, i've never gone out saying 'hey look at me, I'm wonderful"

Thanks Amit, that's encouraging, I've had a lot of "gee you're crap" recently, it does get discouraging after a while, and I have high self expectations

The steps get progressively smaller, until about the time you are ready to start getting work, then that becomes a whole new ballgame again

I think you are doing really well. You have built in an art habit, are doing it daily. That's the biggest step.

27 Aug 08:54

Yeah I hear that. You will, it is only a matter of time and persistence. It truly is.

I wish I could hit that tipping point, at the moment it's just an uphill grind. Yeah I try and keep my eye on the target spot Em, and aim for it, drawing from the shoulder, I think a small part of it might just be that the pen meets paper at a different angle to a pencil.. dunno, if I ghost it I can get it, but I don't need to ghost with pencil

27 Aug 08:51

I think you make the most gains early on, so it feels like it will never end, then there is a tipping point, where things start to click. After that it is just about constant improvement and refining and trying new things ....

27 Aug 08:51

Line drawing, if you keep looking at where pen meets paper it will veer off. Use whole arm not just wrist and look to where you want the line to go. Also do practice lines on a scrap of paper to work out what angle of control you have and tilt your drawing accordingly (always move the drawing not your body). Then again this is coming from crazy caffeine shaky-hands-lady...

Man.. doing warm up exercises - place a dot, draw a line through centre of dot.. only I'm drawing neat little lines /around/ the dot, 3mm off each damned time, be nice if that was what I was aiming for - and thus the difference in accuracy between fine tip pen and soft lead pencil is exposed.. *sigh* another thing to practise.. it doesn't end does it Amit? The more you nail down, the more you have to go..?

I find it funny because I have a huge vocabulary, but don't tend to use it online because I can't even spell the words close enough for the spell checker to guess them, but the English language has always been butchered, you only have to go back to Chaucer and see how much it's evolved, it's the only truly living language. I do wonder how many words are falling out of common use because they are too hard to spell though, and the internet and text are primary communications now
