Yep, the modern world has the attention span of a fly and you have to keep reminding them that you're there.

I think part of it is, that you have to start showing up more often, if you do not show up, peoples wouldn't know who you're.

Chris Oatley talks about the audience part if you're interested into checking that.

Yeah, getting an audience on the internet is way more difficult these days I think. A few years back you could get discovered on DA by just posting your art and interacting with a community a bit, but now...

ive seen people take cartoony illustrations for 80$ and i thought i could also do that , but i dont know how to market myself and all that jazz

i see, cos ive always got this anxiety of making a quality portfolio. im usually at the middle of a portfolio piece then bam stopped halfway cos i just dont see it as something i liked to see on my folio

you don't really need to be great to get work, people just want someone competent who will do what they expect them to consistently.

I don't have any experience with art jobs, but it's pretty normal with other freelance work. The trick is getting a few first jobs and measuring up to the clients expectations and there you go, word will get around one way or another, soon job offers will come rolling in more and more frequently and you got a career going.

is it normal that i see people getting job even though i think theyre portfolio isn't of greatest quality?

Jake Parker also talks about it,

Or instead what you can create is an artists statement :D! Stefan Baumann speaks more about what a statement is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-JyP99q2xs or should I say, the cowboy teacher. Hehe.

It's good to have a direction and goal, just keep in mind that most of them have a large overlap of the same kind of work at the base, so the more you do, the better off you'll be

26 Aug 04:04

im also aiming for the Illustration route , just so i could get the fundamentals down and then after that branch away to animation or 3d or something

Anyone got experience in doing memorial portraits, like private commissions to portrait the recently dead? Trying to think of an interesting and respectful way to approach it.

Jan Kloidt

yeah i'm not still sure as well. but i think i'll go into illustration (mtg or similar things) first because concept art tends to be so competitive in terms of speed and efficiency. first i wanna learn how to make it good, then how to get fast. if i could get jobs where i'd do just lineart concepts for games etc., i'd love to do that but idk if thats still a thing

Watching the Level Up guys do portfolio reviews and man I need to start figuring out what I want to focus on...I like illustration, character design, fantasy, comics, stylized stuff, realism, I want to do all of it??? Agh.

That point was made in a podcast I was listening to, on your way up you're hired to copy established artist style, then once your established your style is copied by people working there way up!
