Crimson COW #9 - The Great Race
#1
NOTE: I CHANGED THE TITLE FORMAT OF THE COW THREADS BECAUSE IT'S A LITTLE EASIER TO KEEP TRACK OF THEM THIS WAY. SORRY FOR ANY CONFUSION.

This week's theme and brief by previous winner, Ash

Creature of the Week
»The Great Race«

"Every year/millenium your village/galaxy holds a great race.
Your species is built for that race…

Any type of race and any type of creature are fine. "

The best of the COWs will be picked by an anonymous poll in the Finals thread and the winner is given the opportunity to pick the theme of the next COW's design, as well as becoming the title banner for that week! So go hard, design something interesting and unique!

Guidelines:
  • No photograph paint overs, must be 100% original work. (See next rule for exception)
  • 3D is permitted and renders MAY be used as whole or in part of a painting, as long as YOU created the work. Pre-made and/or purchased online assets are forbidden.
  • Studies are recommended, but not required.
  • There is no restriction on image formats (horizontal, vertical, square).
  • Environment backgrounds are optional.
  • Keep in mind you are not required to stick to what is in the passage. It is more of a guide in terms of mood.

Rules:
  • You must post at least one WIP in the WIP thread to be accepted into the final poll.
  • Finals must be posted in the finals thread before the deadline.
  • This has to be a creature, but humans can be with the creature. Humanoid creatures are allowed.
  • At least 3/4 of the creature must be visible.
  • Only ONE submission per person in the finals thread.
  • No fanart. We want to see your original, unique interpretations!
  • Voting will be held for 5 days after the deadline.
  • In an event of a tiebreaker, a winner will be chosen through a randomized name picker.

Deadline is Monday, July 19th @ UTC: 23:59

Very cool, reminds me of Wayne Barlowe (Alien Planet particularly).

What a great idea for a theme. I hope to get an entry in too. Great start RottenPocket!

Yeah! The more the merrier. These tend to be posted on my Day off so I smash a start out before my inevitable burn-out.

On that note -
I think the concept is down. I went through a few ideas but quickly settled on a greyhound-type with sharkish/jetplane vibes. Hawks and other raptors have nostrils specially adapted to high air-speed so I figured something aerodynamic with a hollow, kind side-spoiler deal. I don't know the technical terms, but I'm sure it's a thing.

I remember seeing that show ages ago. I haven't watched Alien Planet in full but I think I will go watch that at some point.

Yay! More entries. Four more days, hope some of you are jumping in.

@Jana I'm trying to be looser and just refine the chicken-scratch after I have it down, and making sure to colourize the linework too like what has been suggested to me before. Everything's a learning experience!

Is your road-runner-vulture wearing a golden collar or is it plummage?

For now I think it's close to done, until I get the impulse to fix some areas

"Desert airship", meant to quickly cross the desert with cargo on it's thick tailbase. Can survive on solar energy for some time. Skin prevents loss of water. Doesn't overheat thanks to the numerous airbags in which solids convert into gas, the 3 airbag columns act as sails as well. 3 heads allow for quick and effective reactions to the environment. Special organs to navigate and to detect water. Easy to train.
