Hey man, doing sketches and paintings like these are fine but I think you'd benefit much more from doing studies that focus on construction of the face with a mind to accuracy in proportion and perspective and form.

Look up images of the asaro head to understand the basic planes and shapes of the head, and do studies of them
Also the Reilly method is great for face layins.

Focus on accuracy first, take your time, practice practice practice, and your faces will improve in leaps and bounds. Same goes for figures.
