I think you have a tendency to over-moddel form with your values and I would suspect that this has to do with a lack of form along the edges of your contours. There's always a tendency where if you lack something, you naturally overcompensate with something else. So in the future, pay attention to the contours more. This is where you'll find a lot of overlaps and halftone shapes that really give things a sense of real form. In these portraits, take a closer look at the shapes and values in the jawline to see if you can find those qualities that make it feel three-dimensional :)

I think that the edges was where I find myself struggling more then the rest of the painting, but I don't know if I understand what you meant by over-modeling the form with the values. You meant that because I can't show the form correctly on the edges and mainly on the jawline, that I have a tendency to push the forms on the rest of the painting and also don't show it correctly?
