i got somethin you could try to practice rendering. So, say you're drawing those gators above, right? Draw a gator from your mind, and instead of trying to paint all the scales with brushes, take a photo of a gators skin and overlay it on your drawing and try to work from that. You'll be able to really analyze within the painting how to make convincing marks in comparison to the photo you layed in. It isn't "cheating," it's actually tough and it puts your skills to the test as far as value and lighting, give it a shot!
