Hey with the 3 value comps, I think with some of them you got it right (number 4 looks right) but with some you succumb to the natural temptation to make it more complicated than it is. :) You don't wanna waste your value or make small shapes to try and define insignificant elements or try to prevent things from merging together. Let them!
I drew over the picture with what I see the composition to be.
Personally I think of the 3 value notan as a non-literal study. I think there are multiple good solutions, but there are also bad solutions. But at the end of the day it's about read, and not the literal value of things in the painting.
I don't know what exactly Noah Bradley's views on it are, but I just wanted to make a post because I think it's a really important and neglected topic that I've been thinking about as well.
