Yeah for the moment these seem to just reinforce the cultural consensus that you described earlier. If everybody starts using them, we may end up in some self-perpetuating Middle Ages. The upcoming generators are planned to contain many more billions of "synapses," costing even more energy to run, but always within the same flat structure.
Nobody knows how people learn on the spot, adjust, imagine, find ways, but it must be based on something different. Heck, little bees have way less neurons than the generators but are capable of some forms of problem solving. If we do find how that work though, and the machine re-invents calculus, invents new art trends and solves cosmology, then it's a whole new can of worms we have opened...
