Hello Warre,
I have one small critique on your mark making as i had the exact same problem only a few months ago. I used to get various feedback on transparent looking brush strokes.

If you watch the first video you'll be making more confident brush strokes real fast.
This is just one way of doing it though, don't feel obliged to stick to any one method.
