Yo CG, Im glad you found some use in my recent paintover. The piece came out great!
For your recent comp, personally I like the version with the flag / banner more, Im not sure if its
part of your client briefing but a vertical comp could fix some issues.
I have a hard time with building compositions, but what works for me is that I usually add
a base value beneath my character drawing, and from there I just build up different shapes,
blocks of values to see what would work on a abstract level. The good part is that with this
approach you can freely move around your character and see how it affects the frame.
I think having the character closer to the city could build a relation to its origin
if the flag pattern is repeated in the town for example.
Im still far away from being good with this type of stuff but maybe this approach can help you in the future.
There is a artist called Jaime Jones that I follow / study currently. His work is insane, but its even more
insane to realize how "simple" yet effective he works when it comes to how he builds his compositions.
You can find some of his work to get inspired: https://www.artpad.org/
Keep up the good work as always.
