As far as advice, I really don't know, other than look at stuff besides sci-fi art. Look at sports gear, power tools, cars, etc., and try to take away concepts and aesthetics from that stuff that you know you haven't seen in this genre. I struggle with the same thing, and have had people call me out on ripping off designs I didn't even know existed.
