I think the definition of creativity is coming to associate things in complex or unexpected ways, reaching conclusions that evade those who have not undergone the same thought process.... yet the association still makes sense to everyone, and they're not quite sure why.
I know a bunch of techniques which mean to encourage creativity, but the easiest one I can think of, is the random-associations method. You need to pick a casual random item and then randomly associate it with everything you can, and you should write down every potential function of that item, without letting yourself be hindred by what is realistic, practical, obtainable, or financially optimal. You need to let your mind soar and think of the craziest, silliest, most unusual uses for say... a fork, or a bobby pin, or ice cream. After this moment is done, you can go through them rationally, and pick out the most "creative" ones.
