Just keep observing and don't make it so serious. You keep drawing and drawing. One day you'll notice something about the way someone's face is lit, and go "Oh hey! I like that. I'm going to sketch that." either as is, or only sketch the lighting effect but the face is one of your character. And then later on you'll remember that, 'cos you remembered it with your hands and not just your thoughts.
