Texhnolyze was one of the most atmospheric animes I watched but it's also very dark and first episodes are so slow paced that you can quickly loose patience for the series.
Personally I really liked Planetes which is about group of space debris collectors. I got really engaged with the story till the very end and I really liked the characters.
