B/W to color in photoshop

My personal piece of advice would be not to use bw sketches as a base for coloring unless your bw sketch has correct values and you have a great understanding of how color works.

However that's just my opinion. If you are really into it, then useful blending modes in that case are: color, multiply, overlay, soft light. Add colors gradually, it's easy to over do it in one go. Be patient. Avoid to much saturation, unless you really mean to get something really saturated. If something looks too foggy - adjusting contrast or a burn tool could be of help.

And last piece of advice - experiment! You can learn a lot while doing that.
