For the future, perhaps have the figure a more different value than the background (like have the sky brighter and the figure dark), or perhaps 1/3 of the way across the image rather than 1/2, so that he stands out more.
A good composition test is to view your image at 100 pixels wide. Can you tell what is going on? Also, squinting at the image helps you see the light and dark values better.
