whhhhhhheeeewiiieee long day! Started a big ruan Jia study found some nice hi res stuff, they're easy to find if you just google it like 4k res. Workin on some other big files, so my updates may be quite short for a little while; but i will try to at least post one thing a day
So anyways, i thought I'd share some things i picked up from Ruan Jia, or like some techniques.
1. Use the full array of brush types you can, especially grimy and scattery chalk/texture brushes. Also get a good round brush that blends and pushed colors into eachother well.
2. Airbrush is good for adding harmonies, but be sure to blend the areas affected by the airbrush with the round brush to create edge consistency and avoid that blurry look.
3. literally everything on the canvas has tons of harmony, i've read some rumors or w/e that he spends months adding flicks of color to things. Though i find that hard to believe because you can get the same effects within a few hours.
4. Avoid layers and lasso tools as much as you can. Also super sharp edges are rare, but they do pop up every now and then.
5. if you can, make a brush that just adds random colors with each stroke, saves a lot of time; the Seurat brush in painter is good at that, but not very chalky.
