Some ideation.
Then cleaning up the look I went with.
Teeny bit more work; a friend helped me realize turning the magic swirls dark would look much better. Now looking at color sketches. Close to being able to finally paint. :p

hmm nice stuff; you're unique in the sense i think your imagination pieces look better than your studies :) keep it all going!

Hah, really? I dunno whether that's a good thing or not! Though to be fair, the last time I posted a study here was over a year ago, and I think I've improved since then, so maybe it's just a function of time. Thanks!

Progress. Despite wanting to do this one really brushy and not too saturated, I can't seem to get away from my regular smoothing everything out and pumping up the sat. D:< blarrghle. Hope to wrap this one up before noon Monday.
Also finished this piece, for a friend's webcomic.

just try to do a study of something that will force you to keep it brushy and not saturated; constantly get outta that comfort zone, it will only help!

Unfortunately, given the deadline on this (tomorrow at noon, eep) I don't think I have time to do a study on it! That's a good idea for the future, though, especially as it's a direction I want to move in. I've been wanting to get back to doing studies, anyway, I've been doing a lot of imaginative/portfolio stuff. :) Just gotta finish a laundry list of tweaks and things.

It didn't end up brushy in quite the way I wanted to do it. Turns out, trying to get the strokey look requires you to know exactly where and how far and which way to place each stroke, which is surprise! really hard, and I'm not there yet. :) So I cheated the shit out of it with brushes afterward. It's not bad, but it does lose the look in the small view instead of 100%. I'll probably do a study or two of painters who have the look I'm going for later.

I must say that I think the variation in texture in that one works very well.

Most of what I've been working on I don't think I can show, unfortunately (art test and a project), but here's one late-night doodle and my first Magic card alters ever, after a player unexpectedly asked if I could do one when I was helping a friend out at a local Grand Prix. :D Made pretty decent money off of it too, which was nice! Still kind of thrilled about that.
