I'm going through this weird phase where my figures from imagination look better than the referenced ones

The first two posts are from imagination and the other two are shitty referenced ones. Also a self portrait, I am becoming quite handsome in my old marsupial age.. I'll be eight this year! in human years thats like... 40 years old?

Also a quick oil painting from a photo since i got my linseed oil today, still have no clue what I'm doing lol.

drew lots of sphere thingies today, it's harder than it sounds when you're tryin to get them in proper perspective.

I feel like I'm improving so quickly, i wish i would have done this stuff a long time ago :/.. I mean, was all that time wasted? who knows..

Also was lookin at that Walent guys stuff, copied a few of his sketches

So good it herts...

http://crimsondaggers.com/forum/thread-1802.html

Also need to get back to faces, but i got a good idea on how to do it, the same way i did these gestures, like picking a small part of it and building that over and over, then slowly adding back features each time till it feels easy and versatile

So many sketches in here, some are really interesting. And you're also doing a lot from imagination and experimenting, exaggerating stuff. I like that. That's what I should do, damn it, but I'm sitting here in my cozy comfort zone and when it comes to imagination sketching I suck big time.

I think you feel your memory sketches look better because you are in a more focused state, doing a more careful construction, since you don't have all the shapes already figured out for you, so you have to find them. When you have a reference, you're more relaxed because you have all the stuff in there and it's a lot easier, you just have to reproduce.
Dunno if that makes sense, but I kinda felt that same way when I was practicing portraits, I was so focused on nailing the proportions and likeness that I was completely ignoring construction, so you can imagine the end result was always terrible. I often felt like I was 5 yo again and just started drawing portraits. When I tried practicing from memory, I had no reference, thus no likeness to focus on, so I was focusing on construction lines and all. I had way better results!

Oh and thanks for sharing my thread, I appreciate it!

Cryin 2 this all dai

James: My man! Thx hehe will do

Walent: My MAN!! Whooo whooo yea man I absorbed so much awesome juice from your stuff the past day or two! I literally spent like 2 hrs lookin through it all. I had seen your stuff on DA before but idk I wasn't too interested until i got to see your whole body of work. Like, something about seeing another amazing artist means 100X more when you can get into the grime of their journey. really makes you appreciate it! Thanks again man, you're incredible!

More stuffz,, uhh tryin to ape that walent guy, shhh... but not too much, pretty lines are starting to find their way into some of my sketches. Just gotta make em all that way hehe, well... Did some more circles and some terrible heads in perspective focusing on placement. Gotta get back to heads, i feel I'm slippin for sure hehe, but like i said, gotta use november to become a WIZARD at drawin!

PS i know the pose sucks in the digital one i was tired and digital is becoming a pain in the ass to draw in, need to work on that! ooh but those 6bs are hard to put down!

I came out today to my mom and dad as a koala; they almost threw me out because they're wallabies and some marsupial species just don't get along too well...

couple good keks today, still more on the way tomorrow I'm sure! face hurts from laughing so much...

Anyways, here's some boring fundamentals stuff I'm getting back to. I'm starting to see this kind of cohesiveness in drawings that are drawing with proper... structure i suppose it's called? Like, a line thats placed in 3D space, no matter how squibbly or ugly it is, as long as it's in 3d space has this unexplainable charm. My Tira painting, i think has good colors, textures and a finish but the anatomy is busted up somewhere, I'm just not sure where. maybe the arm lengths.

Definitely was the better of the thumbnails I'd tried beforehand, but you can never really plan this stuff too much. I mean, rendering is easy, especially in digital. I found even more cool tricks doing this using a duplicate layer, then hitting equalize on that, dropping the opacity to my liking, using adjustment filters and then using the pseudocolor effect. Really interesting stuff those layer modes can give!

Anyways, gotta get away from painting like i said i would and try to become a wizard at drawing this month; Gonna focus on structure of course, but more on observation and measuring angles/proportions. I think I've made some good progress with that, just not enough yet, so we'll see! I'm doing this because I can copy a drawing from a book and each time it will have wildly different proportions, so yea measuring will be good; have gotten too used to the very forgiving lasso/transform tool.

Hey, the mass of studies are really nice to see.

I agree with what Walent said, and would add that you could benefit from taking a little more time with these studies. In both faces and torso there is some elongation going on, and general proportional issues. Just use that extra time to place your facial/anatomical landmarks, and further observe their placement. This will also help improve the line quality as well.

Keep going! :]

Reply
Archeux: thanks bro! Quantity over quality has always been my thing... Yea landmarks are something i noticed i slacked up on in my Tira piece. Still got a ton of bad habits to work through but I will beat them with sweat, as I've said. I don't mind the long hours, as I don't have anything better to do!

Well guyz, so I felt a bit frustrated today, tried to draw many things but deleted them... I had a few ideas about pursuing things but decided against them, and remembered how much i loved Adrian Smith's stuff, so I'm gonna study him for the rest of the month and what would go into making stuff like he would do for his B&W stuff.

This is all i can show for today, i need to go to bed I'm just too frustrated to work right now..

I've found posemaniacs, though it's pictures aren't super stimulating, have incredible versatility, since you can spin them around and study a single pose. Incredibly useful!

Also here's some Adrian Smith Worship, gonna be studying him all month, so expect more badass orcy demon dudes
