When your're doing gesture drawing, don't just calculate angles and negative space, etc, imo it's good to do them on a still life, but when it comes to gesture, you should better think in term of space, and really observe the figure for proportionst'll be more useful than negative space and stuff like that when you'll work from imaginatin !! see you're havin hard time figuring the masse, one tip that helps is to simplie volumes of the body by finding the corners between your front and side view,
