It ''better'' to have happy accident than to be over critical of small detail if the big shape read the small shape will read to a certain degree. It not healthy to get to close to the work if you work from a distance you can get a better idea of where you can simplify and where thing need to be reading.Alternating between area of rest and interest. Finding the balance is certainly complex in organic object. It not just a question of rest vs interest it a question of density of detail (how far apart the visual noise is /how heavy it is. By heavy i am kinda refering to value/hatching .Hatching is tricky as it not necessarily by value that it create visual noise but by the amount of line weight that it generate value.
When i say happy accident i am certainly not referring to the hatching this as to be done deliberately to represent form change.I am more so refering to the organic break up to much intentional break up and it become stylized will to much chaos and it not necessarly readable and pleasing to look at.
With organic subject matter you need practice it not organized as the brain like it yet it follow a pattern. What i recommend is doing texture scale that help with just developing a visual pattern.
Peter Han as some free video (title often include the keyword dynamic sketching) on texturing and some paid one if that something that still abstract to you. There a few principle that certainly will help you create your own or just help you observe thing with a new understanding on how translate small detail into a repeatable ''formula''
