Thanks everyone for the insight it’s reassuring to know I’m not the only one wrestling with gesture drawing! I’ve found that mixing quick timed sketches with slower, more deliberate studies helped me appreciate how flow and structure interact.
For those who’ve made progress, did you start strictly with short timed drills, or did you incorporate longer poses from the get-go? Also, I’ve been experimenting with drawing natural forms like branches or drapery first, to loosen up before tackling the figure has anyone else tried that?
And one resource that’s helped me anchor the movement is Bridgman’s 'Life Drawing for Beginners', it breaks down weight and action in a really intuitive way.
