You should try 3d scuplting specially since blender is free and full of free learning resource. When you reach a level beyond blocking the form and proportion. When you start to move into the study of the plane i recommand it. It just happen that i am doing a return toward character and creature design. I think my favorite feature is the ability to pose your creature with what call rigging it basically to create rotation point. Think of the arm for example placing ''point'' that help move the 3d model into a pose. Let say a straight arm can turn into a bent arm it a nice feature but it wont teach you proper muscle deformation so i really recommand a good supplement of anatomy on top if you want to use 3d for thumbnailling/testing/studying.
I would seriously think of using it specially if you feel like doing animation or storyboard in a possible future. It help keep the model consistent.I am not the type of guy that like to restart over to draw the same thing i just got more thing i would rather do.
