Experimental piece and practice rarely fit the bill of a portfolio piece. For color you are in control of that and don't need me to figure out what you like in term of palette but how to get a palette that work that a topic you have to explore on your own. lt up to you and how you want thing to look some people have success with monochromatic palette so really there isn't anything i can say to help unless you know what kinda of color vibe you will be working toward. Color is not a straight forward subject with define rule it one of the thing that can be very personal and therefor can be hard to teach. It always good to keep in mind that color is just an other building block in the visual communication you have to use the color to communicate a story or emotion and to create visual appeal and sometime that visual appeal just isn't my cup of tea that doesn't mean it as no appeal or that it doesn't communicate properly.
It best if you learn about color theory by studying from life first and than other artist rather than having me sit here and convince what color approach should make sense to you. But before we talk about color we should talk about value and saturation. Why? Because it often what make two color sit in harmony and why sometime it hurt your eye.
