Adding those ''little tail'' like you did on n.5 ball help give a sense of direction when construction they could be useful to indicate the direction of where the light come from later on once you start to go into value and light.
You could also get familiar with the perspective tool but it might be one of the least intuitive tool to use right away so this one could take longer to get us to.
Drawing free hand as much as possible it just a skill that useful whenever you want to try new program it make so that if some tool are different or not supported you still can rely on your own skill. One other reason tool can be heavy to learn is you need to memorize the interface and the short key. One of my favorite thing i recommend before you really commit to any drawing program is to first of all try not to change to much of the shortcut so you can follow tutorial but once you get more comfortable with what is what i recommend you find short key you find comfortable to use with the stylus if you have a button on it or shot key you could use with one hand so the key should not be to far way from the left side of the keyboard i suppose so you can use the essential key like shift ctrl that really expand the amount of short key you can map
