The reason the original artwork was on a square comp was because of the restriction of the CD production. (Im sure you knew that) If you're doing this for fun and not adding text or trying to solve the problem of formatting the image for print on a CD, then I would get away from the square format and a lot of your composition issues will be easier to address (like where to point the sword)
