Kimonas's Sketchbook
Thanks for dropping by guys!

Fidodika- I pretty much agree with all your comments, I suppose it was a work in progress. Previously id finish one area and move on to the next, but i was experimenting with trying to work all over the painting at the same time. Kinda tough though!

Hey Jeffrey! Thanks for your kind comments on some of my past work. Im sure ill re visit the warhammer universe at some point :) I agree with you comments!

Abnormal - you are totally right, i think this was an experiment gone wrong :)

Zipfelzues - Thanks for dropping by and for your kind comments! I agree with your comments. While the rendering was going ok, i didnt feel in love with the poses or story.

Started again with a different idea, a bit more narrative, and a different approach to brining out a silouhette :)

oh yea, love that chiaroscuro you got going, haha. lot of good overlaps going on here. The dragon looks really sweet, but the figure I'm not so sure about. If you were about to fight a dragon, would you really stand like that? with one knee bent? That dagger looks like it ain't gonna hurt him, maybe he's summoning the dragon? I can't tell it looks like a kinda awkward pose, not really understanding the narrative.

One piece of advice I have for you is something I heard say I think Will Terrell. He said the best way to improve your creative output is just to create more. When you're detailing and painting all this stuff, yea you're getting better at rendering but you're not creating new stuff you know. See, then you do this comp and it looks twice as good, it'd be even better if you did like the same lighting setup but from the idea of the dramatic camera angle you had with the last one. Cuz right now it's your standard horizon line for the comp, which man, if you could do this setup with that dragon that sense of form and that lighting, with a better camera angle and figure pose, you'd a folio piece, even if it's greyscale (which i know you wanna do color.)

Hurry and update!! I'm interested!

Fedodika -

Will make it a bit more obvious with some subscattering and silouhetting of the embryo - the warrior has a dragon egg hostage! Maybe that makes more sense

I could have gone for a more dramatic pose/perspective, but this is a non folio piece, and some experimenting. Add to this that dragons are really out of my comfort zone, so maybe next time! I really cant experiment with the pressure of doing a portfolio piece. I want to loose my edges, and get looser, and maintain high quality rendering in the focal points. Until i get this right in my personal art im not doing any more folio pieces. My current style hasnt gotten me where i want to be so i want to grow a bit!

Sure there is the temptation to churn out high quantities of pieces, everyone is doing it! Im a bit more slow paced. I like to think about not making mistakes i made in my last piece and focus on learning. I think quantity is great when practicing but not for making pieces or illustrations. But hey i could be wrong.

heres some progress with early WIP. Im trying to work everywhere in the painting at one rather than just rendering the shit out of each place at a time.

Well keep at it bro, only thing I could suggest is maybe making the dragon a little more pissed off or surprised at what's going on. You did a good job fixing the figures pose though! The dragon seems kind of indifferent to the situation right now TBH

Fedodika - Trying to make the dragon more pissed off - still a WIP. Its a bit of a flawed piece, but i'm enjoying it whilst coming up with a general direction for my art over the next year, i think ill hit the studies again and look to paint a few more folio pieces after that :D

SO just an update

The composition isn't the greatest and the warriors silhouette isn't as strong as it could be, but i'm really happy with the style and rendering. Its easier to manage details, control edges and feels more painterly. I settle for that!

More studies coming up to try and consolidate whats happening here :D

Dude, been stalking your stuff for some time and I figured I should at least say something xD

Awesome work and progress you have here. Really liking the latest portraits but the eyes kinda look too symbolic to me~ like the shape of it is what your brain tells you how they look so you just throw it in there without any thought about how they function and stuff. Did that make sense ? Course not, maybe so xD

Anyway, keep it up and keep on practicing ! :))

Heres one hot off the press, working on some more portfolio pieces :D

I'm really happy with my new process, I'va almost halved the amount of time it takes to make a finished piece, and my edges are looking less artificial now. My materials are reading a bit better. still some work there. Will also try and work on color variation :D

any thoughts appreciated :)

Hey Kimonas, I love the last piece, particularly legs hips, pose in general, is
very attractive.

I always love seeing you update your sketchbook haha. I really like the latest piece too, but a couple of thoughts. Her jaw area feels super masculine and her cheek bone sits a tad low on her face. If it's intentional for her to look more masculine, then disregard my words.

The bushes behind her 'magic' also creates a bit of confusion. Because it's so dark and predominant, it takes more than one look to understand the leaves aren't some texture in her magic. Fading it into the background, or allowing it to be blurred more, will clarify the area. The back hand is also looking a little stiff and off. The hand pose is quite hard to actually pull off irl.

Can't wait to see more!

Hey guys thanks for dropping by! Took ages with this one, but real life work and some laziness got in the way :D

Liberty - Thanks a appreciate it :D

Chubby CAt - Thanks for the feed back - some good points - Ill have to pay more attention to magic effect in the future. Drawing hands and then rendering them is def a problem area, ill need to get round to more studies.

So here's another illustration, hope yall dig it. Happy for the crits!

bro you're gettin crazy dood!

Well if i had to give a crit, i'd be nitpicky about the hand on the axe, the pose of it is kinda distracting even though its a tiny part of the image. It's just an odd way to place the hand, and I think a stronger grip would fit the sort of victorious theme of the image better;

Also, the overlaps going on are fantastic; but the background has like this static look, like everything is based on vertical lines. Like he has a good pose, and you know everything looks good, just say like the lions in the background could be tilted, even if you had to fake some of the perspective because all the elements in the background seem to go straight up.

I could be wrong about all this, it's more the things that jumped out at me. It's a fantastic image and I wish i was as far along as you are :,D
