dont be scared to use a deep shadow to indicate like the contour transition of a shadow from the light; it may not look like that in real life but it gets you thinking about edges in a new way and it looks cool:

as youre drawing still lives, try to lose more and more lines until you can get an image with just edge and tone, you can learn a whole lot about control doing these
