It's an alternative way of thinking as opposed to muscle memory drills. Feng doesn't explain it at length in the video, but what I think he's saying is that getting a solid understanding of 3 dimensional form and perspective will cause very fast improvement, and that's very true.
You shouldn't be thinking about your images in terms of lines. You should be thinking of them as 3d shapes.
