I might be on a completely wrong track here, but what I think the problem is that you seem to draw the eyeball as if it would completely fill out the whole eyesocket, though that's not the case. Actually there are a lot of muscles there which make the eye move.. that's how I interpreted this subject from Glenn Vilppu's stuff.. sorta like this:
