I mean taking note direct on the side of the drawing i know it distract from the image but for the drawing you do for yourself.I think there 3 type of drawing one is a study one is a correction of the study and the last one is from imagination if you study like this i think you will see the most improvement.Of course i said that because i have seen and heard many artist repeat this but it an actual hard thing to do because the brain just get bored of the same thing being drawn over and over.
The febula is like a unbend bow shape going inward but it as little to no effect on the superfial look of the leg so i guess it more important to get the tibia shape correct. But i would personally focus more of the knee if you can draw a good looking knee there is little to nothing you can't draw in my opinion. There so complex because there so many thing attaching near that point and it change shape so much when the leg bend or twist.Overall most figure are covered by a jean so i would say you could delay learn in depth the leg but of course if you want to specialize in nude drawing it important to learn. It just depend on what you aiming to draw.I recommend learning in depth from the knee to the foot and than later coming back to finish learning the upper part of the leg.
