Darkiste: Thanks my dude, i think there's a misconception with the studying thing people have; I enjoy doing it like, its fun for me to execute studies and learn new stuff. Jeff Watts makes this learning entertaining and exciting, so im not really worried about the fun leaving the building. I've got some goals and im right on track with making them happen, it just takes a lot of tweaking to fix the huge gaps in my knowledge to where i can execute those ideas i have in my head, but im enjoying the whole way there! But i will account for what you said, because when you draw, you problem solve, and you do that with or without reference ;)
TRIGGERED: Solid is a term used by trans exclusionary cis white male privilege to marginalize people who may be made of liquid, I'd appreciate in our safe space if you'd refrain from using such violent language to oppress people of liquid who are disenfranchised by the Cis solid male patriarchy. Join us later comrades as we begin the liquidist revolution against the solidoise, Fight the power!
Some sketches today, spent a little more time on these than my usual imagination sketches so that's why they look better quality imo. Im finishing up the hour long watts head demo so i'll actually try to get that drawn out tomorrow, its a fun russian atelier master study
Watched I Saw the Devil today, in fucking credible!
2 hr, maybe alittle more study from watts, mine is a little skewed in the head area, mainly near the top right, i dont believe the elipse is completely correct forming the skull but i like how the calligraphy turned out with the intricate patterns. Gonna FINALLY start on female heads tomorrow, which will be wonderful because that's what i truly wanna draw is gorgeous ladiez
horn: I assume you mean the one on the right? ya i was goin for a qt thing there
Rough day, did a repeat of these 5 minute watts sketches, and man these are brutal. Some of em turned out quite accurate and some pretty off. Having to compress so much in that amount of time is really hard, id say harder than even an hour drawing. Mistakes jump out quicker though, which helps and if your hand isnt hitting it in the ballpark in a short time, that quickly finds an issue.
whew, eventful day yesterday... Gonna try to do a lot of invention tomorrow and get some mojo back for that. It'll be good to see if i can summon up a lot of the things ive learned and just do lots of scribbles and what not to let loose
alrightey, did a bunch of feature studies from stuff that i just liked. I love goth eye makeup for women and the ideal I envision for future pieces actually has that down. These invention sketches are so brutal, like it really makes me realize how much time they need, you cant just draw a cool character head in one minute, it takes looots of pushing and pulling and designing to make something worth while. I can't just say, oh I'll do 10 of these today! No lol, im lucky and i truly feel lucky to get two as decent as these.
But ya these first two are 100% from imagination. And they looked nowhere near this within the first few minutes. Just push and pull till they get that john grello kinda look. Its some kind of magic that happens in proportions and shapes, i really cant explain it. Also getting more into figure from jeff, which seems complex but interesting. It'll be good to know all this stuff so i can go take it all again and absorb it even moar!
Hey Fedodika great to see you put so much dedication into studying the head, definitely on the right track. :)
One thing I can suggest to help improve your portraits would be to incorporate more varied line weight. I can see your already doing it in some of your drawings but alot of your shadows are looking very soft giving them a flat appearance. There are tons of drawings online from Jeff and the other teachers so take a look at their work and see how they do it.
Peter: Ya edges are still troubling me a lot, my mentor pointed out some things where i go too hard or soft on things, but i have an overall soft/mushy rendering style so its challenging trying to make things hard edges or super clean/tight. Thanks for the comment my dude, keep studyin ;)
I've spent tons of time doing quick bullshit drawings and that's ending up this year so far making me waaay more money from that than stuff (via street caricature) i am more calculated on. I want that to be the opposite case. I'm still mostly on track with my goal of the watts stuff, kinda dippin the toe in figure work
whew, so im gonna try to plunge through a few of these tomorrow, probably faces from watts. It is cool though when i draw faces from imagination now, i just do things instinctively to make them more appealing, more of a careful eye for shapes and what not.
So im starting to crack into some ideas maybe within a year from now when i start to put together a portfolio for whatever kind of thing i wanna do then. I definitely wanna do some fan art, using great reference and inventing accurate props/ weapons also using like several references as guidance. I love Bobby Chius one vid on how he designed that imagine FX gecko thing, just have lots of different things up for inspiration. Might need a bigger screen :O
Whew lotsa shiet today, practising these spiderman maniquins which is super fun and i always get a leg wrong but i have doctored these a little to adjust the proportions i had incorrect. Sometimes i get the gradients right on the head studies, theres really subtle pressure sensitivity things that go into getting that plane change to read beautifully into a cast shadow. Its fine tho and im happy this watts stuff so far, cant wait to start do more.
Also may do some more imagination stuff tomorrow, tryin to alternate
lots of flawed, quick ballpoint studies and applications today; Fedo takes another step deeper into the rabbit hole in relentless 8 hrs brute force drawing
Gliger; Yea actually i learned a lot of my brute force work ethic from niccolaides, for good or bad, ill let the viewer decide. I can often be seen blaming my shortcomings on his teachings but it could be a large factor of things, mainly rendering too much. Its tough to find a gallery of his, or any of his work, but yea i mean, definitely use his stuff at your own risk
Finding so many cool artists lately, need to copy the shit out of them to get a little bit of mojo, that magic you get when you land on their page. I'm gonna try to start tomorrow with imagination sketches instead of ending the day because i'm always too tired to get a decent amount drawn or any good quality ones, those i like these, i find them quite funny; i have a bunch of "studies" laying around of these and i'll try to do a big scan tomorrow and maybe a little watts with the grindin. I really love this way of drawing even if its not really productive and wastes my time, at least im enjoying the activity
You should try to play with the level to adjust the different value. Here i just use photoshop auto contrast option and than play with the level. You want to have a wielder range of grey i believe.Saggy eye idk if it like that in the reference but it look strange.Doesn't require a ton skill since can preview the result will ajusting the level.Just use the level handle and go crazy and see what work and doesn't.After than you can use the smudge tool to blend stroke that became to strong.
Darkiste: thanks m8 i fooled around with it, might move one eye over a little bit tomorrow, it still doesnt feel just right!
Whew lots of these today, i really enjoy copying these heads from other artists. The ones that have their own photo are some invented ones i kinda liked. The more i do, the better the quality gets, just slow, takes a lot, i don't mind ;)
