Flo's sketchbook
thanks for dropping by everybody, this really made my day :)

@ warburton: you are saying something that is really important. i have to slow down and really think about stuff more. at the moment i more or less feel my way through a piece, but i will have to activate my left brain-half more. maybe then all the stuff sticks better.

also while doing sickbrush's assignments i found that i have to paint and construct from life waaaay more. I am rather happy with copying a picture, so i have to get out of my comfort zone and do something new.

so slow real-life construction has to come now.

cheers,
Flo

just some things

i am still not too happy with my lines. i think it is because i heard from someone important that he thinks my strength are backgrounds and not characters/creatures that makes me tense up when i draw.
also atm i work for exactly that person doing more or less composition sketches. not a very interesting work but i need money, because i want to travel soon :)

cheers,
Flo

hey guys,
some obsidian and iron studies, done in SAI, because I am currently at my parents house and they deleted ps from their labtop. a friend of mine and i are working on a 3d model and i am painting the textures.
the iron texture sucks, because it is to much going on. i have to flatten it more and add fewer dents and scratches. also it looks too much like rock. maybe more spec would sort that problem.

i have to say i kinda like SAI maybe i will work with it more.
cheers
Flo

Nice studies! Never realised how nice of a material obsidian is.

Very interesting sketchbook you have, such diversity and range, really nice to look through :)

hey everybody
last week i wasnt at home, so i couldnt do as much. this week i mainly worked on a project a friend of mine and i are doing. it is the "dota 2" contest on polycount.com. really awesome site, a lot of information and nice people, but more focused on 3d art. my buddy is doing the meshes and i am texturing. have a peek here:
http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1684467
I had to do a study, to get my mind off of flat material work and think a bit about human anatomy for a change :)

Cool work on the dota 2 thing, and some really nice other worldly faces in your traditional sketchbook, the wooden buildings you did in thumbnail are reading very nicely also, keep pushing it dude!

i decided to do some warm-up before doing some work. this is what i do then. does anybody else have a routine for something like this? to me it is just getting my arm loosened up and trying to do all the motions i need for drawing: straight lines, circles, ovals, curved lines, some eye-hand coordination, trying to think in 3 dimensions, some perspective sketches, stuff like that.

flo

some more warming up stuff. i dont know if i will keep posting this, since it is pretty ugly random stuff, but i haven't decided. maybe it serves some people as inspiration to get down to the basics, instead of starting right away.

I think you really nailed the palette, it has that 2d platformer feel. While I'm no enviro expert I'll try and give some tips.

The left tree's branch looks like it connects on the backside of the tree but the lighting suggests it's lined up on the side. It should be coming into the foreground since the tire swing is a platform to jump on. In the river (this is more a game design thing) there are rocks following along the foreground, this implies safety to jump on and the player might think it is safe to jump/fall down into the river(I know got me acouple times haha.)
I'd pump up the "I'm a bad guy" look on the hedgehog as it is a little neutral at the moment.

The biggest problem I think, is the right side. I couldn't quite make out what it was. I think a floating platform infront of a receding hill?
If it is actually a small mountain in the background, I would lower the feather power up so it clips the top, showing it isn't floating on it. and de-saturated the top because it reads as foreground.
Hope this helps.

hey atrenr,
thanks a lot for the overpaint, it really helped to clarify some issues i had with this piece.
i did some corrections and worked your input in, where i saw it fit. the "implied safety" is no problem for as it was my intention to "save" the player there, when he screwed up the jump. he then drops to the stones and can try again. the scene i have shown here is a part of the vertical slice, where he learns about swinging stuff and double jump. so my intention was to give him/her some challange while keeping it rather safe.
your critics were really helpful especially about the right side. i added some gradients to hopefully show the platforms better. another big issue for me is constructing shadows, i should look into this, as it shows in my work, i am afraid, that i am not too sure with that topic.

Its coming along nicely. Maybe sharpen up the top edge of the platform pieces, it can help show where they are and were the player can land. Also keep an eye on the depth of things, at the moment it looks like the right most platform is farther back than tree so the jump from the tyre would look strange as it appears in line or in front of the tree. Unless you get cute and the guy goes behind the tree giving a sense of depth to the 2d movement...and secrets etc. could be hidden like this too.

Hope this helps

hey everybody,

thanks for the input, it really helps, so keep it coming :)

overpaint of the swing-set and a new one, hope you like it. if not, help me make it better :)

also some enemies, one more thoroughly designed, the other two more or less speed-paints^^

aaand a character design i am working on for myself.
here is my description after which i started to gather ref and sketching.

Azura Swift is the best bow-fighter in the kingdom of corvus.
Her agility and preciseness seem unparalleled and no one knows of anyone, who saw an arrow of hers miss a target.
She is smart, silent, beautiful and calm. Nevertheless, she can be cold as ice and her cold gaze can make a grown man look away in shyness.
Everywhere she goes, she carries with her “Smity”, a shy mouse, which she sometimes talks to and feeds.
Her weapon of choice is the bow and arrow, but she also weares a short curved sword and some throwing blades.
Her past is not to be spoken of, as she lost a very close person, which is partly responsible for her quiteness.

adjectives: agile, quiet, precise, deadly, beautiful, smart, cold, sad past

cheers,
flo
