nice my man! i see you're adding some curved lines in your stuff and it is helping add some life to your work! Just keep at it, and keep following the Alex Woo, he knows his shit! A good tip would be before doing the final lines, do several loose gestures for a character, then pick the best one and render that; the more you do the more you can experiment before hand because pretty much the entirety of an image is the gesture

Will do man, i've been trying to practice drawing quick mannequin figures like that for these linktober drawings, really helpful for just figuring out the figure before drawing it larger.

haha, yeah my friend pointed that out to me, this is what I get for drawing while sleepy, it kinda works though with him looking at his hands with that expression so i'll pretend it's intentional xD.

Thanks!, yeah the shape exercise is a lot of fun, never even heard of it before I started this course but it makes a lot of sense, I especially need to keep it in mind for composition.

Not much to update this time, finished with the shape exercises I think I understand them enough to move on, i'm having a lot of trouble with the next one though on silhouettes so i'm thinking of doing more on the line of action.

Cool tangles. Keep up working on all the different ways to look at form! I used to think one just "draws a person." Now, it's like, which way shall I draw this person? Like a mannequin of simple forms, a curvy stick figure, bold blocky shapes, like a proko robo bean, as a skeleton, with contour lines...? Aaaaaaa, too many choices!

Tygerson:yup, honestly i'm having a hard time trying to figure out how to incorperate gesture into my figures(without them looking like spaghetti anyway).

Started the cylinder challenge for drawabox 250 cylinders, trying to mainly improve on the short ones, those cause me a lot of issues.


Still trudging along on those linktober drawings, it's almost december but these have been a lot of fun.



Did a comic thing, started this about two months ago, these comics seem to take me a very long time to finish,I need to figure out a balance between quality and efficiency.

Fedodika:Cheers dude, i'll save that for later, I should say I am doing gesture drawing each day, I just don't bother posting because 1.that's a lot of posts haha, and 2. I feel it's a bit pointless given nobody can really critique them without the ref nor are they too interesting to look at, that being said i've posted a few of the silhouette ones today.

you need a tighter feedback loop, try doing a drawing from reference to the best of your ability and then hiding it and doing it from memory. Or better yet watch an instructional vid where someone like proko is doing a gesture; do your rendition, watch him draw it, then redo it from memory. that really friggin helped me!

it's funny you mention memory drawing, Amit over on the discord group mentioned it, i'm gonna be honest it's never worked for me nor been all that appealing, I get that it's a useful tool but for one I find it so boring that my brain shuts off and secondarily when I do do it, I just end up memorizing proko's drawings rather then getting the point, I did this a lot with the spine assignment and I don't feel it helped me at all.
Not to say I don't critique my work against his and redraw it repeatedly though, I just find that the memory part of it doesn't work well for me.

thats the thing, it IS BORING! and hey if you can memorize (which is the point) a drawing of great complexity, do that! Imagine if you had the whole anatomy book committed to memory, man I'd love to have that!

All artist have to face the fact that not everything they do is fun nor do they all learn the same way and retain information the same way.

Ask yourself seriously this question how can i do study and retain the information in the most enjoying fashion i can afford.

Sometime the answers is fan art sometime it still life sometime is drawing with friend or streaming to force you out of comfort zone those are some of the way to push yourself out of the comfort zone.

Ultimately a critique is just an opinion that you should consider as something to push you to the next level there almost no bad critique if you know what you aiming for aslong as you reach you goal the road is sometime unpredictable.Also i advise you understand there many way to memorise something you should do research on that.

A visual libreay don't appear magically in your head you need to draw alot to retain information.It call brain plasticity it just mean that the more you do something the better are the chance you will retain the information.

Deconstruct describe compare those are the key to understanding .
Don't be afraid to be messy exprimentation come from a mix of controlled chaos.

Darktiste long time since i've seen you around!.
That is true, I was mainly focusing on the not working part though, I find myself memorizing the drawing but not the main issue behind why it went wrong, I tried to memorize a lot of proko stuff and it didn't really help, same for the old loomis days I memorized the crap out of that book and it hardly helped me make a dent in figuring out figure drawing.

I find constructional drawing and analyzing where I went wrong and how to fix it much more useful then just memorizing the image.

That being said you are correct there are plenty of ways to memorize something, I might just be doing it in a fashion not good for me, so i'll have to think over other methods.

I think a good example of this is in observational drawing, for me classic observational drawing just wears me out and due to arm issues just hurts when measuring with the pen.
Then someone on the discord channel posted this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecJO1LnjXpA it works much better for me and i've been doing it more or less daily to train my eye.


Not sure what you're talking about with the critiques? if you mean the response to Fedodika's suggestion I mean no offense by it, I love and really do appreciate it when people give me crits but I don't always agree with the methods suggested.

As for visual library yeah I know that, I use ref constantly and study from it when needed.

For me art is a state of mind when you start to learn something it really important that you have no distraction the reason being that if you want to retain information you need to be tell the brain that it important.As you brain get fill with useful new information you will start to fill like you getting exausted but that a good sign that mean you either not doing something right and you aware and it trigger you or it mean you starting to stock new knowledge.I also readed that to learn something it important to strech that practice overtime.Mileage is key to retain information in my opinion.

I would like to share with you this two post i made a while back when i was thinking about how to improve my study mindeset.Hope it can help you learn 1 or 2 thing.

Thats a good read thanks, bit overwhelming but i'll bookmark it and read over it a few times.

I think the measuring excercise I posted is a good example of a feedback loop, it's a fast but effective excercise that has an immediate feedback loop, I could try and find something like that for memory drawing too I suppose.
A lot of the regular art methods have become gruelling to me, either out of just individual dislike or grinding too much(see my early conceptart stuff I grinded like crazy with no real output for the knowledge). For me trying to keep it fun or atleast engaging is a top priority now.

One more thing if you feel bored about doing study you could try to start a ''fake project small project'' it can help you find new area you could be improving in future study.Sometime you need to step away from the routine even if it might be scary.

Oh don't be sorry I appreciate all the help dude!.
By projects do you mean stuff like the Sucy piece I did?.
Tbh i'm doing them occassionally for fun but for the sake of simplicity i've been focusing soley on form, figures and perspective in line.
My painting/colour skills are mostly terrible but I feel it's better to just focus down on cutting out as much stuff as neccessary so I can focus(and even this is overwhelming sometimes lol.)

Also doing the linktober pieces taught me that I really do enjoy working on small relatively quick drawings a lot, and I can quickly critique those afterwards, still I do sometimes like to do projects if it comes naturally to me, I sometimes just end up taking these drawings a lot further.

When it comes to being bored with studying though, it really isn't the act of studying that bores me, i can get quite into it sometimes I think it's more the specific method, as said that change in method of learning accuracy has helped me out tons so I should defineitly look into that for stuff like memory drawing.

Well for me what stop me from wanting to draw more is me realising that my approch isn't working as much as i wish.So i generally stop my task when i sense nervosity to refresh my understanding of the subject or to seek for different approch outside of my own.As you progress in the way you understand the fundamental you go from a simple dumb down approch to mixing many of the fundamental into a more complete and realist approch.But i recommend that each fundamental be learn separately before being mix to one and an other.

For project i wouldn't be to specific unless you aiming to work profesionally.I would need to know what type of art career you aim if that what you plan on doing to give relevant example.As far as i can tell you have a lean toward illustration.

I think i should quit being so over critical until i saw more content being post here.But i can tell you that the exercise you doing from drawbox.com will pay off.
