Darkiste: i dialed a lot of the texture back

Chubby: great observation! soooo much tweakin today, i went with a less is more approach on the eye, less detail, just some well placed soft edges

truckin along... i think its looking very nice, i feel like theres something im not seeing at this point maybe.. maybe its fine, im not sure. if anything looks weird, let me know; i included the ref.

Yes, always gotta have those soft edges on the eyes ;)

A few observations below. Nothing looks bad, they are just more nitpicks than anything.
I think the biggest thing is the proportions - in your version her head is quite small, her body is large. In the ref her body is narrower cause of the angle, and her head is actually bigger. The ear feels like it's a touch out of perspective and you've made the lobe a lot bigger than it actually is. Also, might just be a personal nitpick, but in the ref we can see the planes of her nose a bit more; the angles of the supratip down to the columella, whereas you've rounded them out.

Hope that helps! It's looking quite good and you can definitely recognise who she is :)

I think overall she as more white tint in the reference than what you have so far specially on the chest area and around the neck and on her shoulder. On her arm i think you still have some edge work to do and i see that the core shadow should be sharper if my term are correct... where the form turn really rapidly.

darkiste:  with an oil painted look you want blurrier edges

Chubby: yea, she had man shoudlers before, i worked a lot on getting her more petite frame. her head is still smaller in my picture, but it gives her a more mature look, and less like a teen, which i enjoy. i see what youre saying about the nose, but it wasnt really bothering me, it feels done to me and i dont want to go too much deeper into it. I also made her jaw a little fattier and less narrow which i felt was kinda masculine.

Im at the point where i look at it and i dont cringe, so i think im finished. the lace was a lotta fun, lots, yea its blobby, but still took like 2 hours to get it to follow the form. If only i could pull this off with oil paints lol

I think if i change anything, ill probably add some subtle plane changes to the nose and make the earlobe a tad smaller

Your arm rhythms are weak, they are so even and undefining that they create a big resting area that competes with the rest of the image, the photo has a better contrast between upwards facing planes and lateral ones for the shoulder as well

it's very subtle, and more about how I perceive that curve than an actual geometric measurement, especially since the shoulder strap on her back is visible, but y'know, just saying

it almost feels like a different painting because it's so flat and its forms don't really lead you anywhere

also, idk if you already adressed this but those stripes are a pretty powerful compositional element, you might wanna add them to your portrait if you wanna judge your composition better

also the forehead curve is smoother, and those loose strands reach the eyebrow level.

maybe I'm wrong, and maybe none of this matters for your study, just thought it might be useful

Gliger: thanks for the big writeup i tried to fix everything you mentioned, and i think theres a noticable difference with each of those things.

Im gonna come back and dial back a few things soon, was in town all day, possibly tomorrow as well. theres a show coming up i wanna do an oil painting for, im gonna dedicate next week to it

note: i really notice the arm is flat now that i posted it, and ill fix that soon

really like the value range and how you captured a really subtle expression, id agree on the arm looking flat , however the focal point (the face imo) is riiight on

Dawckward: big thanks bro :)

been fucking with gouache a lot today, its hard a hell. im doing a color chart for zorn digitall atm. im mixing the colors on the computer from red black ochre and white. its very frustrating and time consuming but once i get it all done ill share it and i think thatll be a good think to do before going into a painting to get my head in a more mixing state of mind as opposed to just picking colors

Did a multiply layer on the arm and tried to show the plane change, its noticeabley got more form now so i think that'll sort out that problem. any other tiny nitpicks are welcome of course

I want to bring attention to how you represented the countour of the neck to have to much an angular rythme to it instead of a nice smooth pattern of curve.Specially on the left side.Your shoulder rythme also doesn't resemble the reference.I think the clavicule form is also no totally done you have given it a much more stronger shadow but if you look at the reference from top to bottom the pattern is shadow and the form roll without an other shadow of a same intensity. An other issue is the rythme of the Sterno mastoid muscle where it attach on the sternum near the base of the neck could be more curved than what you indicated.

The ear still looks off imo. Not for the way it's shaped, but because it doesn't look like it's painted like the rest of the image. It's also the colour, I think. The colouring is not seen anywhere else on the skin, so it's such an obvious contrast.

Darkiste: im not really seeing it, id need a clear paintover to see if anything in that area is wrong, my eye is not hung up on it, and if i try to move or change anything it looks worse

Chubby: good observation, i lowered the value so it didnt jut out as much on the ear, i see the difference now flipping back and forth but i think the image is looking solid at this point

So im starting this oil painting this week and im preparing rigorously for it. i bought a nice frame and even ordered some artist grade paints for it. I did a charcoal study earlier to find what problem areas id run into drawing wise, so now im on digital working out how to mix the colors i want. Im using a mixer in corel painter and putting down opaque tiles to make myself not blend too much and get bigger strokes before i go to make the first mark.

Tomorrow ill be busy redrawing this, and trying to mix colors better which im quickly improving at after that zorn chart i did. the second image im uploading is a reference that i edited to make the composition i want, the third is me tiling in colors in a very manual fashion, mixing the colors on the Zorn palette on screen and putting them down. Then when i go to oil paint it, i wont waste much time since ive worked out a lot of problems in advance and can therefore mix and think quicker

alright more prep work. This was done completely with mixed colors on corel painter to get myself more familiar with mixing. The eyes are really hard to draw they still look wrong, and the nose is probably too wide. I tried to paint again with gouache today, but its just a total nightmare, it dries so fast, the water on the palette likes runs into other colors and makes the paint too thin, i cant blend on the canvas, and adding a white makes things darker :D

Tomorrow gonna really work on refining the structure and getting the drawing nailed down, i think if i just do a good drawing, and slowly build up the forms with rudimentary values and slowly introduce color exactly how i did this picture, it oughta be fine

From what i have observed with a lay over on the original there a compensation to make the feature seem to be more horizontal there not follow the proper tilt of the face. The right nostril still need to be refine as it should be more narrow and it doesn't show enough form(light vs dark) you have also shown more of the nose face away than necessary. To correct the eye i would compare the ellipse of the pupil and you will see they don't have the same degre for the eye i recommend you check to see if one of them is crooked here the nose obstruct the second eye making the estimation much harder so an under construction might help with the centerline of the face and proportion line to adjust the angle.

Darkiste: its busted up for sure

Spent the whole day just gridding out the photo and simplifying into an attractive head shaoe. I wanted to draw something i could easily transfer to a canvas, and i think i got a strong result, which ill do so tomorrow. Any little things i end up changing will be small tweaks for likeness in the painting. I redrew this probably 8 times, and gridded it out on the computer to make myself a map to follow. Theres little lines that line up and can be complimented with structural indications, its not like the usual grid.

also this little lip painting from watts to see where im at, was much easier than gouache, felt like christmas. was breakin out all kindsa stuff like different brushes, linseed oil, all kindsa stuff. i feel confident on the painting thing its just transfering the drawing thatll be nerve racking

After a few days i conceded defeat to the oil painting, it was stressing me out too much and low and behold, i couldnt draw the line art correctly, and fit it on the canvas, so yet again, the inability to draw and observe properly is a huge obstacle!

Decided id also start actually familiarizing myself with oil paintings, hence going through watts workbooks i still have, so im gonna try to get those in in the meantime. Also trying to do some imagination stuff, and some figure studies to try and get that skill up because im tired of drawing complete stinkers at life drawing class. will be gradually doing an hour or so to space myself out and keep my attention throughout the day without just going gung ho on one thing all day

got a fantastic idea for a portfolio piece today, itll be difficult but ill truck it out. Ill have a rough lay out of it tomorrow. i was in daz a lot today figuring out lighting ideas for it. Itll be similar in layout to this. I also wanna push myself on it so i stay focused and have a real banger to show for it. already gettin sick to my stomach how much work its gonna be ahh im excited and terrified :D

awesome updateeees!! i personally agree and do fun stuff for a part of the day like rewarding myself, and afterwards work on stuff i know im not good at, idk about others but at times i feel as if im not worthy to enjoy the skillz id work so ahrd for or that i have to use them to something that must yield to something and sometimes just exploring and sketching can remind us why we work so hard, its so we can have even more fun!

as a small crit the last figure has the quads too long! otherwise i love the value and marks showing form, and the contrast pulls to the face nicely so thats a win!

dawkward: Thanks my dude! good call on the quad, i drew the torso a tad too short and thats what threw the rest of it off. Doing these figure studies like an hour each day, makes me observe more having it next to me and thinking about improving it which is very helpful

So i spent a few hours on the first painting but i am scrapping ti since i feel its a boring effort, and i wanna try something more adevnturous. The first painting was goonna be part of like a poster thing, but i dont think itll fit, and i need to stylize more and get more gestural, so came up with this second sketch. I like this a hell of a lot more, its got narrative, design, composition, and hold my interest. The girl looking ups face is gonna be edited more to match a likeness of a previous sketch i did, its just a placeholder currently. Im looking at TB choi and some other artists im getting inspiration from recently, lotta line heavy digital concept artists.

Crit the ever loving shit out of it if you want, its in a loose phase. Again, scrapping the first one, second one i will pursue for now.
