CC3 studies and wips
#1
Hey guys

this is my first crimson crucible challenge and i really want to improve and work hard at this illustration.
I am gonna focus on studies and refference collection for the first week,
moving on to the second week i'm gonna study some rendering styles and try to implement it to my illustration
and finally i am hopefully gonna finish the illustration in the last week :)
(i am always open for critics)

here are some first references for the enviroment and the character clothing :)

did some thumbnailsketches, charactersketches and colorstudies :)

the idea is a sandwarrior dude that finds a treasure and is like surprised by the amount of gold.
maybe i will include a trap to the enviroment.
I am not gonna hold on 100% to this idea and maybe change it completely :)

Hey Leonard, good stuff, I like that little kid, and the soldier study. In terms of your approach, I wonder if perhaps you should start on the illustration sooner than the last week. It can take a while to find and settle on a good composition and figure out where to pit your studies to best use. Anyway, keep it ticking away!! Glad to see updates, cc3 is much quieter this time around.

thanks for the kind words,
i think i will focus on lineart next and try to push the composition as much as i can.
And i will probably go for the sanddude and not for the kid :)

If i have a superclean lineart i will try to paint it with the ambient oclusion technique from alex negrea,
so i paint in the ambient oclusion and add multiply layers to color the picture.

Hopefully i can finish it.

Nice application of AO, but you need to round out the basic volumes of the various forms more since everything seems pretty flat, like a cardboard cutout. Just remember to turn the forms more as they curve around and disappear and things should be better.

Maybe change his facial expression a bit, he does not seem concerned about his surroundings!
