Curious about the Brotherhood of Daggers
Posted by: Asmodius - 06-28-2013, 04:50 PM - Forum: INTRODUCE YOURSELF - Replies (2)

Hey fellow visionaries,

I heard about this website and got curious about it, all I really know is that this place is good if you are getting serious about art, which I am. I have always been interested in art, particularly concept art but never knew that it was a viable career choice. As it is my dream job I am now taking it seriously and wish to reach my potential as an artist. All the best to everyone who is in the same struggle with me and thanks for taking the time to read this :)

There are a lot of introduction threads today!

It's a little overwhelming, because most threads I've peeked in seemed to have some sort of awesome art education, or experience.

I have little to none. Wanted to go to school, for anything really, it never really worked out. But that doesn't mean I haven't stumbled around the internet, looking at different things and trying my hand at it.

Hope not to disappoint, will post some stuff in critique once some major lurking has been done. You guys rock, so talented and inspiring.

Oh, uh

I live in the middle of nowhere, enjoy long walks on the beach and making friends on forums with bloodsplatter backgrounds.

Hello folks!

My name is Alexander, and I like to draw! I graduated from Guilford College 2010 with a double major in Geology and Information Tech and minors in Drawing and Ceramics. I did that in four years, which to some people says 'motivated' but could be better described as 'indecisive'. If you are wondering what one does with a geo/IT/drawing degree fresh off the press the answer is become locally renowned for making hello kitty latte art at your barista job.

Amidst a sea of youthful professional hopelessness I found some measure of relief in my art, and I began taking classes again part time. I did quite a bit of printmaking, some painting and drawing, but I was becoming really fed up with people telling me my work was too narrative and that I relied too much on representation. I was starting to feel a little bit crestfallen until I took a fantasy illustration class with Matthew Stuart (magic card illustrator) where I was starting to realize there was a world out there where you could draw awesome dragons and not be slave to PoMo nonsense.

I enrolled in a Illustration/Design program at a local design school. (I also have a strong interest in Graphic Design. I think the highly mechanical part of my brain that enjoyed Science and Programming took well to font selection and type layout. I do some freelance design for my local library.) I made straight A+'s but unfortunately I found myself taking out new student loans to make a bunch of shitty collages and write papers about things I'd already been taught. I didn't draw a damn thing, and I felt a marked decline in my skills because I was too busy doing busy work to actually make art. I dropped out after a semester. I applied and was admitted to some much more prestigious institutions (SCAD, SVA) but I just cant swing the tuition.

So, I find myself here with roughly a sophomore's education in the arts trying to teach myself the rest of the way. I understand that I have some raw potential but not the technical prowess. THIS ARTICLE led me here. Despite some setbacks though I'm feeling hopeful about my future and even if I never make it as a professional artist or designer I'm enjoying making work. I'm looking for community and critique and hoping that I can be of value in return.

  Artner Partner
Posted by: Shaun Roboticvs - 06-28-2013, 07:30 AM - Forum: INTRODUCE YOURSELF - No Replies

Hello everyone, I'd like to give Eva Props on helping us branch off into a smaller group. So i thought it would be a good idea to start a new thread where we can list some of the criteria that we would be looking for in an Artner Partner.

- Male or Female (doesn't matter)

-Personally I really would like a partner who is closer to my time zone (Hawaii Pacific Standard Time) although it doesn't matter as much if we keep in close contact

-Also would like a partner who is a little closer to my own skill level. I've only been painting for 3 years and I went digital back in early 2012. So I have a lot of catching up to do and i don't want my partner to feel as if they have to backpack me.

-Also would like a partner who knows how to Robot-dance Tongue

Officially the first message board I've ever signed up on/posted to, so, Crimson Daggers, you've taken my V card... thanks for being so gentle everyone.

Where to start...

I was always (heh) 'drawn' to art, which is probably true for most folks here. I remember being mesmerized by Smaug on his pile of gold on the copy of the Hobbit we had, magic cards, D&D cards, Boris V's cards, just amazed me. Jim Lee, Dale Keown were the first two comic artists I put my eyes too, etc etc, then I hit sixteen and discovered girls, and things get a bit blurry for awhile.

Eventually, lost and distracted I discovered you could make videogames for a living, which was a revelation. I went to game school, which was my first experience with the privatized schooling system where they milk you for a fortune and give you a mediocre education. It was ok though, me and a few others teamed up and took as much as we could from it and each other, and most of us got into the biz... it was sunshines and rainbows for awhile. I worked at Propaganda, Radical Entertainment and United Front games, about 2 years in is where the economic troubles started and the way we make games had to evolve to survive the gamePocalypse. Two years after that, fighting for contracts with more experienced game developers, I bowed out, broken.

Much to my surprise though, after some time not making stuff for others, that little thing in my brain that consumes media and defecates ideas in my skull started piping up. I decided that, since I wasnt gonna make textures anymore, I should probably use photoshop for something, and teach myself to draw digitally. I drew my son a poster of a dinosaur, it took months. That was two years ago. Since then I wrote a buncha kids books, and started illustrating to improve, so I could get to some graphic stories I wrote, and somewhere along the way it became apparent that this was what I wanted to do, period, and I'd sort the 'getting paid' thing later. I recently joined up for Noah Bradleys Art Camp, which is where I discovered Crimson Daggers.

I've been doing this totally alone until now, lurking like a troll in one basement or another, the community provided by the art camp has been... well words don't really describe, but I'll assume if you got this far, that you understand. We're past the halfway mark at Camp, and I realized recently that I was terrified of its ending, mostly because of the ability to share and talk and generally build momentum with like minded people. Then CD was brought to the conversation, and here I am.

Thanks for existing, thanks for taking part... lets make some cool shit together

cheers,

k

I'm sweating and it's 3:22 am, but I just wanted to say hello.

"Hi, Crimson Daggers, my name is st. alpentine."

"Hi, st. alpentine."

So yes, that was my extremely special and wonderful introduction. I don't want to tell too much, because that would require a lot of thinking and I need some sleep, so I'll just cut down to the basics.

1.) I've always loved art. Even as a little kid. I think that's usually a standard story for most people here!

2.) I originally was enrolled in an art program at my old university...but I allowed myself to be distracted by outside things and it caused me to fail a lot of my classes and lose confidence in my own work.

3.) Because of that, I couldn't draw for a year and I felt...well, lost.

4.) I enrolled myself into a smaller, more local community college as a Communications major. It's something I like, sure, but I still want to create, but I also know that funds are very tight and my family is far from rich. Art School has become a luxury and I feel like I need to improve.

5.) So, I came here.

Introducing myself is not an easy task...
Posted by: CancerConstellation - 06-27-2013, 05:17 PM - Forum: INTRODUCE YOURSELF - Replies (3)

Well, what can I say?
Hello will do nicely as a start.

I've been involved in all kinds of forms of art since the earliest memories of my childhood so it's something I am really passionate about. My art is something that I've never posted on the internet due to my lack of will to get out my scanner (I just moved to a new apartment). Joining this site will motivate me to look for it and upload my art. Currently I'm aiming to improve my art greatly by much practice. I have hugely varying interests so don't feel shy about talking with me!

-Crab.

Greetings. My name is Terry, i'm a second year art student in Malaysia. I aim to be a concept artist in the game industry one day. My interest in art started from video games and animation. I wanted to become an animator in the beginning but after encountering amazing concept artist like Jonas De Ro, Andree Wallin and such, i have decided to aim for a career as a concept artist.

I hope to learn alot from everyone.
