mmmkay, some studies of the guy who hosts life drawing near me Garry Pound, i stare at his stuff IRL, love the caligraphy, he drew even me the other day! its on his instagram if one would care to dig. And some Jeff Watts figure/portrait. I'm looking forward to Soul Calibur 6 coming out not becuase im gonna buy it but i'd love to do some fanart since i'm a huge lover of that franchise; could be a good business move, we'll see if I end up going there sometime this year
Been playing again with what you did for fun since it so much easy to learn on someone else piece because you can focus on improving the piece rather than being attach to the work.I tell you i am getting addicted to this rapidly.Keep the character away from the same tone of the background.I had fun playing with the filter also to create some fast iteration.I think what i mean is to show you that you don't need to put alot of work to try and learn new thing.
Do you know the artist xin ding? https://www.instagram.com/xidingart/ It is very good just to see his drawings, you learn a lot and it has helped me a lot to simplify more, mmmm maybe it will help you to focus on one problem at a time, eyes, nose, mouth, divide and conquer. Keep rowing.:3

abnormal: haha funny you mention him, i used to copy his stuff before he got "big" so to speak on instagram. He was one of the big influences on my caricature style which i dont post any of because its not something i want to do for very much longer if i can avoid it. He gets a good likeness tho, and i get reactions like that (burst of laughter) maybe 1 out of 6 or so people i draw. Hes definitely worth copying, you can learn a lot from studying really cartoony style people, its also a great way to find a skull shape in these stylizations, it builds a deeper insight into heads imo. I learned the most i think from John Grello, but his style is more realistic
well i actually did it and got through 4 watts vids! :) the trick is to watch 2, then do two executions. Life then happens, you know not drawing stuff, then you come back watch 2 more then boom more life then you do two more executions. I doctored these a bit in painter, but not too much just a few nudges of proportions. For some reason straight on face poses are crazy hard, and the drawing jeff did as the reference had some weird lips, but i copied it anyways. The tilted pose was a bit strange in the shadow patterns, and on the back pose i drew the right calve too short so i had to stretch it in painter.
these are intense man lol, supposed to be like 20 minute lay ends but i end up spending like an hour and a half on them and still not satisfied with some of the shapes. itll be fun to apply these at life drawing friday, and tomorrow im gonna try and get the 1 hr portrait done and maybe some invented stuff to cool off soo ya
What the intent? What the fundamental you want to improve.I just want make sure you not copying for the sake of copying but actully working toward a goal that serve to further your skill.
Just curious to why there strange separation inside the form there indication of transition of light i would assume?
Did you ever try to draw soft gradation? With a stomping tool?Did you tried to use different grade of pencil to control your value?
Darkiste: the fundamentals would be, observation, shape design, anatomy, line weight, and hand dexterity. I'm not particularly worried about copying for copies sake for these types of things. The lines are an indication within the form are as if the form was being hit by light, but it is mapped with the edges in advance before a tone is laid in flat, so as to make the shading process more efficient and accurate. its really useful since just adding good line weight can show 3d form without any tone at all!
I did a quick imagination piece probably about 2 hrs on it, spent extra time finding a pose i liked then smashed in a bunch of photos a bit recklessly, but had a lot of fun. Realized i dont know drapery that well, but i know some artists who do like fenghua zhong and decided on a quick study of one of his pieces. Also did some rock studies in pen by an outdoor painter named ruo li, which made me appreciate how intricate rocks can be and have beautiful shapes. I wanna go deeper with these sorts of things, they have their own language. The rocks here are from imagination
If i were to take this piece further, which i dont plan on, i'd design a more appealing background, start again and be more dilligent with the designs of the armour and cloth. I'd stylize the cloth, maybe even find an even more dynamic like floating pose to allow for some cool fabric trails all around. Also i tend to make a persons weapon, hands way bigger than they should be, but im surprised i got a lot of the proportions to my liking otherwise. I always loved those soul calibur splash/concept pieces with the super dynamic pose and flowy fabrics and what not, should probably study those ;)
buncha stuff, studies from Hogarthe's dynamic drapery, a ruo li study, and an old asian woman jeff watts study, as well as some continued effort on learning the fabric stylings of fenghua zhong
spent a lot of time on this today, mostly was from imagination. the fabric was fun to draw, spent probably 2 hrs on the feet using heavy reference and i still dont like em that much lol. overall i think its pretty cool, may try another soon
Darkiste: thx :) i was going for more a floating thing, or leaping. I like the idea of flying or levitating subjects, more surreal
Spent about 4 hrs on this one today, entirely from imagination, i didnt even peek at any reference or inspiration. Tomorrow im gonna get back to reference, gonna go for five whole vids and executions tomorrow, wishing myself luck, which i dont believe in!

What the obsession with no ref if it speed the process.I think you should just limit the time you spend on searching ref.I think a good exercise is too take a ref and than try to redo it from an other angle or try to push the pose or try get inspired by a pose.Did you made some gesture exercise?
Here a quick critic for the last piece in think you can try to clarify the silhouette inside the space indicate try to avoid to much grouping of the limb near the body it doesn't help the eye to rest it become noisy.
I think if you didn't you want to explore the gesture before choosing to commit to push the exagerration of a pose and come up with the best idea.
