Off to a good start. Studies are cool but make sure you're thinking about the structure of what you're studying and then try to draw some stuff from imagination so you retain the information.
I think you shouldn't worry so much about the single strands of hair. I like to look at Dave's April O'Neil as a good example of rendering hair: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v403/M...Rapoza.jpg
It looks super detailed, but he's mostly drawn major shapes within the hair and then drawn a couple single overlapping strands here and there to make it look more detailed.
