I find with edge control, it is far easier to have close edge control using subtractive painting methods instead of additive. If you make a soft gradient, then cut back into it with a harder or smaller brush, it's really easy to get the hard soft transitions.
Drawing out of perspective is like singing out of tune. I'll throw a shoe at you if you do it.
