Great point Walent, and it should be used for anything. Simple objects and figures alike.
My grain of salt : you should try and describe the forms (not only the shapes) you see in 3D space before you actually start painting, going through the form, really trying to figure out in your mind it's volume, orientation and so on. Be it by lines or in your mind actually.
That's what I'm talking about when I say forms, Forms, FORMS ! xD
Trying to be more analytical.

It's actually then very much easier to render and light those forms as you actually KNOW what they are -which is sometimes not the case when you describe an object-

Here are a few examples

I never have time to type these in on sundays events, kinda frustrating, hopefully you'll get what I meant then.

Cheers :p

@Mr. Toodles- I think you're talking about the perspective sketches that Heaven posted. I didn't draw them. But cheers for commenting anyway.

Some speedpaintings from today from the Sketchathon event, mostly done under 40 minutes. and the last one is a study in progress.

Wonderful work.. I added a few soft brush strokes. Because a few soft brush strokes completes the image a little more.

hey alot of hard work its so nice to see man! i saw the nose drawings you did, i think you should focus on the forms and shapes that make the nose look like it looks, the bridge, the nostrils, where it attaches to the head how much it portrudes and how it differs between ethincities, put some brain into it thast he only way to get the most out of practice, its ok to try to make things look good but the foundation its alot more important in the stage you are in (and it will benefit you when you get into that sweet rendering and detailing phase) :D either way keep at it man you are doin great!

@Heaven- I will and I hope you do the same
@M-Rahsart- Really appreciate the paint over. Why didn't I think of that! Thanks for pointing it out. I'll definitely use a soft brush next time.
@LeonardZC- You're right I need to nail the foundations first. I'll definitely keep that in mind next time I paint. Cheers!
@Nim- Cheers man, i'm just doing my best to keep up with you. I'm already ready for the next one.

good portrait! very good subject matter for understanding lighting/shading :)
on the same note. my understanding of lighting and shading really grew when I played around with materials in zbrush... matcapping and trying different materials on on busts and looking at the preview ball. you use zbrush right? think I saw a spinal column.

Man, you're doing so much these days!
Just thought I'd drop this on a side-note, maybe you already found a way yourself; but you asked about the move-the-canvas-around thing in Photoshop some time ago, at least if I remember right. I'm using the CS2 Photoshop that was released for free some weeks ago, and after changing the display mode via View->Screen Mode-> Full Screen Mode I found you can shift the canvas around by holding space + LMB. Maybe that helps, otherwise please just forget about that annoying comment :)

@nim- Yeah, Zbrush does teach you quite a bit. I'm planning on doing some more studies using it. I can pass you the folder if you like. There are more than 10 high quality images in it. My portrait for today will be up later.
@foxflake- Thanks man, yeah, its tricky that one. I can do it in full screen mode but when its in window mode sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. You have a great memory I must say and thanks for pointing it out.

So 2 challenges weren't enough. Yesterday I challenged Bee (CW admin) to do atleast one annotated study a day. I can already see the benefits of doing this. Its great fun and I feel like i'm in school again.
So whilst working on it, I decided to make a brush out of the scales to help me with a piece i'm currently working on.
Here's #1 for today:
