Nexuun's sketches

Music
Hey guys, I've been here for a bit and have decided it's finally time to start up a sketchbook. I'm hoping to work in art like a lot of you guys are. This year I hope to continue to improve :) Also, you can call me by Ryan if you want.

Drawings from this week. I really need to find a way to dedicate more time with drawing and still balance it with my school work.
Drawings on the bus and the cleanest one was drawn regularly(warrior with the helmet). Trying to actually design some characters now instead of drawing random naked dudes. Loomis studies at the end. I am going to try to do more studies now. Criticism/critique will be appreciated on anything.

Hey nexuun, thanks for hanging out on my stream. So you've obviously got a lot of passion for this, keep that up. I'm not sure if you have an anatomy book or not, like Bridgeman's or Hogarth's but I suggest getting one and drawing a lot from it. I see you've been doing a lot of figures and gestures which is good, but your anatomy is lacking still. Anyway, keep drawing man you're improving :)

Alright man, I'll be sure to crack open the anatomy books soon.

Hiya! Update: life drawings of the nude female model!

It's my bad that I haven't updated a lot lately. The last three saturdays I've done life drawing of nude models for about 3 hours each sessions. It was an amazing experience and I learned so much, which will be impacting how I continue to learn. And now for the drawings. They're a mix of gesture drawings in charcoal. And 20 minute/30minute/1hour long poses done with pencil and charcoal for the atmosphere.

yeah, always greaat to see someone new having dedication !! keep it up, but may i suggest for now to only draw with lines, without any hatching, or anything else, just thinking about the volume and drawing it the most accurately ! The more you're specific in what you're learning, the more you'll improve fastly ! keep it up !

@kikindaface: Hey man, I've taken your advice and have been focusing on my lines. I think I've learned something from my focus on them, recently.

I'm continuing with my figuredrawing. How is the rhythm in my figures? For some of these, I built figures on top of gestures I drew from my imagination. I still feel like I have an empty understanding of gesture, and the rhythm involved in it. Gotta keep working at it, I guess.

Also, more critique and advice will be very much appreciated.

I'm returning to the community. This time I will be much more active, and I hope to learn a lot from you guys! I will update soon with older stuff, but here's some eye studies I did tonight utilizing Bridgman and some portrait refs. Eyes have been bugging me lately as I can't draw them anymore!(including many other things). I'm going to attack my weaknesses, and along with that I will be trying to create some more actual art, as well.

Continuing to do eye studies. I'm thinking of doing some self-portraits or close studies to get a better handle on eyes.
Also, some practice with some of the Vilppu fundamentals. I think this is a good idea to do everyday, in conjunction with gesture drawing. There were also some silly doodles that I enjoyed doing, haha.

And last but not least, a set of gesture drawings, 60 seconds each. I haven't done these in a long time, but they're such a great practice(and a good warmup). I'm going to try to get into the habit of doing at least a set every day.

More eyes, and a quick sketch I did for fun. I don't usually draw the side of the body, so I thought that it would be pretty fun. Didn't do any gestures or vilppu; I need to make sure I do some of that tomorrow.

More gesture-drawings, this time 30-seconds instead of a minute. And a sketch I did in the day for fun; the weapon really sucks. Either gotta continue with heads, or go to hands and weapons.

So today, I drew my sofa on some big ol' newsprint. Couple hours, didn't time myself so I don't know, haha. It's still a WIP though, gotta add some finishing touches to it tomorrow.

Quick little sketch I did yesterday of a character. There's such a vast difference between my ability to draw from observation and from imagination. I must do something about this! ~_~

5 value studies from some masters. That's really not enough for a day. Though, learning about old masterful artists is a fun thing. I also worked on my sofa for 20-30 minutes or so, I think it's closed to being finished. I'll get a photo of it sometime in the future.

If anybody has any tips or advice for doing value or color studies of the masters, I would appreciate it. I just started doing it, so if you see me doing something wrong or poorly please tell me, so I can correct my mistakes. Also, it's my focus for this week.

Hi Nexuun - great start on your sketchbook :) you're on the right track definitely.

Value hmmm! all I can advise is make yourself a value range chart with whatever pencil you're using before you start usually from 0-9 with a mid-tone inbetween, then you have a better idea of what value range the object your drawing falls into...

also squint, squint a lot, it makes it easier to see the values. Then open your eyes to see colour (also sycra on youtube has some great videos on colour and everything else)

keep up the sterling work :)

More value studies
[Image: master_value_studies_2_by_ryanprovenzano-d6kyj86.jpg]

@Angel_Intheuk
Thanks for visiting my sketchbook, Angel. People have definitely told me to squint a lot. This second time around I think I was doing it a bit more often. Though the value scale isn't necessary for these(you only need 3 or 4 values), as the purpose is to study how the masters arranged the 'big-picture' of values in their compositions. I also reached for a different subject matter this time around.

I know about Sycra, he has some pretty great videos. I haven't watched his videos on color yet, but I'll be sure to do so soon! I'll also make sure to keep up the pace(and maybe over time do more work every day, who knows).

@Manny: Thanks Devan. Yeah, there's still quite a bit more to go. I think I'm going to start doing color studies tomorrow, otherwise I won't get enough practice in color this week.
