Amit: Good call my friend; I set up a folio review with Zoe Robinson tomorrow from Art Order just to work those things out :)
Sorry for shit photo, gonna go to town tomorrow again, just some shape studies from ppl I like, gonna try to go harder at everything from now on because lifes too short not to give everything 110%!
Trigger: Thanks man she got stuck in traffic so it's rescheduled for tomorrow :p
So i saw this dude painting last night and I was just so inspired by how he kinda smushes paint around and makes it look fantastic. I got the urge to try something RIDICULOUSLY hard, so i said well why not do a master study of my fave painter Bouguereau. So I'm making this painting with the same technique as from that vid I saw, like no or minimal line art and just push and smudge things around with crude marks until I get it right.
So far it's been very strangely satisfying, and I cant wait to get up tomorrow and just plow through it some more. I'm about 3 hrs in, I imagine it will take probably 10+ hrs to finish, but it will be worth it and I wanna get really fast at these because in the future I have plans that I will need a lot of digital painting speed (and detail/realism) to accomplish. Might as well start now :)
Amit: Ah yes, thank you; Zoe is amazingly sweet and helpful. I'd reccomend her to anyone!
So review was quite interesting today. Apparently I am ready to get work if I make some small tweaks to my gallery. So basically, I'm going to redo my most recent piece because I'd stretched the sketch and it threw all the proportions off. Also I'm making the light more sophisticated, since Zoe said my best pieces tend to have the theme of, "nailed the light, nailed the piece."
Aside from that, she thinks I could get some freelance going if I apply to these companies and am patient. she only had me remove three of my 14 pieces, and I'm probably going to redo two of them. Lighting, and creature design is my strongsuit. So, I'll definitely take what I can get here and begin pushing into the uknown.. Just need one more full body no background piece, then I'll start emailing. Not sure what that piece will depict just yet.
Bouguereau piece is a real toughey. Seeing a lot of proportion issues even as i upload this. It's still strangely fun though, knocking all those lasso tools and transforms around. I feel like I'm getting a very elastic and refined sense of how to make things conform to a correct look. I can dig that for the time being ;)
Also recommend this to anyone pursuing freelance from Dave and Dan, LOTS of great insights to be remembered no matter where you're at.
So, I have this little theory about design. Basically most things can be broken down if the design is good to have this one phenomenon. Small, Medium, and large. I even did some crude drawings of stuff on my desk just to show it. Very practical items that have the recurring element of Small medium large. I've seen tons of people adhere to this in the best of drawings, even if they are totally unaware of it.
Next time your observing something, it can be helpful to break down the chunks of what is Small Medium Large, to get a broad understanding of what you're looking at. It can really REALLY help simplify things and make them way less intimidating :)
Felt a bit discontent about these first ones, I didn't feel like i was thinking dimensionally about the head. So i watched some vilpuu and he caught me back up to where I thought I was, so I'll def also be doing some more head studies tomorrow in depth ;p. The second pic is after vilppuu
so went to town today, but beforehand did a few of these; just some form wrapping exercises trying to see new things about structure and anatomy in the face. Gonna do more, because I see some interesting things in it!
Thx Miss Ass kick! Yea, I'm not gonna finish that one because I learned I should at least make some rough lines to indicate where the biggest of the big forms are. But I'll probably start up a new master study soon ;)
Sent out some emails today, not gonna hold my breath but hey, it's a good start. Gonna try to make that a part of my day, even if just half an hour of pedaling my shit as amit calls it lol. Here's some quick studies i did because i hate painting flowers and not having a good knowledge of how to add harmonious colors and shapes within them. But i do like painting flowers, and skulls, and girls... probably should paint more girls skulls and flowers :)
I've been studying small/medium/large shape design myself, KNKL went over it in a recent video. I've studied it in other artists works but I hadn't thought about just looking at regular objects for it lol.
