Went to my first life drawing session today hosted by local artist Gary Pound

http://garrypound.com

Was really nice, and not much surprised me, but the best thing i took away from it is why people say life drawing is better. it's like... When you're there, you're there, the model is on a clock and you have nothing to distract you. I dont get up every five minutes to check this or that stupid thing on the internet, just draw and its great!

Definitely gonna go back more often, being surrounded by this dudes work was really inspiring and kinda made a lot of stuff feel "real." Sitting in my room all these years, it really makes you wonder if alot of this stuff is real like real professionals and even nude figure drawing. But ya was enriching, highly recommend, even if the rest of the class are a buncha old people who can't draw for shit, which will probably be the case ;P

He had us do contour drawings without lifting the pencil, and blind contours, as well as standard gestures. I really wonder about the value in those things, like blind contour; it seems a debatable subject, but i did notice i thought differently about the continuous contours. This dudes great so, im sure there's at least something to it haha

alright so started working from Nathan Fowkes book and it has really been insightful seeing these techniques in action. I had no idea you laid in the charcoal sticks and then smudged it across with the side of your hand, or the use of a tissue to blend tone!

Still got a lot of technical boo boos im quite aware of now; mainly how to hatch properly, making edges more coherent and careful, and of course eye placement which is something i need to be more careful with. Also watching this Bradwyn Jones dude on YT's vids he has a nice technique im gonna try and learn what i can from. Reilly method helps for sure but observation is still  a part of it.

Need to just do more, and watch and read more stuff in between until it works, but yea i feel I learned more today than i have in a while, need more days like this tbh

On 2/21, I prefer the "recall" one to the "with ref" one. I think you gave him more personality.

Also, I like the lady on 2/25--really vintage or something.

Tygerson thanks bud <3

So this first one i spent about an hour and a half on, hence why its kinda loose in the details and forms, also the eyes are bugging me with their alignment. This second one i hope to get to the quality of this more often, its a jeff watts study, i spent about 3 hrs on it with a charcoal pencil and was a lotta fun finding all the little forms he can indicate.

Just gonna keep working on portraits for a while until i get solid at them, later on in the year ill probably work more on figures and gesture more closely, and then maybe next year ill work on a more sketch or you know design/illustration style. I feel like I've had my fun with that exploration type stuff and need to just make things look correct before i try and get back to it.

the more detailed one is a watts study i think. I need to draw smaller, and i noticed an issue I have with finding the ear or the back of the jaw, whew tired, but these are fun; I notice all these little things now about edges and lineweight; hopefully in a few months these wont be wonky anymore, so that'll be cool; the second one is from imagination, and the rest are 2 vanderpoel and 2 hogarthe studies

Tygerson: THANKS FOR KEEPIN ME ALIVE!!

Life drawing today, was super frustrated trying to draw a nice face on a good gesture... just need to do it more, and be more precise, or less precise, who knows lol. Also starting up watts online drawing course, gonna work through his asaro head stuff tomorrow, which'll be fun, these are some skulls i drew along with it, and a portrait of a good friend

Lol

There needs to be a "face gesture drawing" class. I have hundreds of blank faced mannequins staring back at me in my sketchbook. The face you drew with that one looks good, though.

Hey! Your construction stuff is looking great, also really glad to see you heading to life drawing and looking at Nathan Fowke's books! Seeing Watt's work too is really making an impact on your tonal studies. Try not to over focus on faces (I know it's tempting) and tackle the whole figure whenever you feel up to it. You're improving really well, keep at it!

Reply
Tygerson: eeh face gesture, ya i mean it could be helpful, but faces are all about symmetry so i think it'd best to learn the planes and structure pretty tight first; But I always appreciate you coming by muh dude ;)

Eristhe: Hey thanks! I'm really gonna lay into heads for at least until May or June just to make sure i get it down to where i dont struggle with basic lay ins and i can get things coherent and symmetrical. Im going to life drawing it and loving it, but every time i go to lay in a head on a figure it just totally fudges, so i need to at least get that worked out. But life drawing helps me not get behind on figures at least.

However after May or June im gonna hit figures super hard for the rest of the year since Im building up a good idea of exactly what i need to work on. Im gonna first for the head months go through Watts stuff with lots of copies of his work and rewatching his lay ins, and at least "watch" all his head videos to see where they go up into the later courses. Also gonna work from Loomis, and Hogarthes head drawing book which i just got and its fantastic, lots of weird and interesting forms to study in that.

Then for the figure months im gonna try and get all matessi's books on Force and copy the crap outta those and read his theories on gesture, then ill also do watts figure drawing course, as well as probably resub to NMA and go through Karl Gnass' course again since i learned a ton from that and still remember most of it at life drawing. I'll also see if i can get Proko's sexy anatomy stuff and learn to shade the muscles and indicate them well. And if I do all that i just might sort out all my bad drawing habits this year, and it'll be a lotta work, but it'll be worth it!

I wanna get so good at drawing that people online start asking me for advice/tips, that's when I'll know im getting somewhere. I'm gonna try to paint as little as i can this year and shade sparingly, but definitely when I feel like it since adding tone is the cheapest way to learn how to paint. I have NO IDEA what my portfolio will end up looking like and what even genre I'll be into at that point. But if i had to, I'd imagine at this point itll look fine arty but also illustrationy like Igor Sid, Deharme, or Cynthia Shepherd. But no promises, just the promise of improving and staying crazy ;)

Hey man, that's a pretty great action plan! You're gonna improve in leaps and bounds with that. The lay ins are looking great, and good to see you focusing on structure and symmetry, really get those fundamentals down. Make sure not to neglect the first gesture stage of watts process before you start laying in. When sketching faces for life drawing, studying quick construction grids might be a good way to bridge the gap between heavy construction/layins and very quick gestures. Should help you get a stronger idea of the form, too.

Keep it up!!

Face, then figure...sounds like a good plan.

I love the force book--after reading it, everyone looks more beautiful.

Eristhe: Thanks youz! Still got some hairy lines to work through; I did a whole buncha stuff today, some long, some quick, who knows where i'll be by may!

Tygerson: Matessi is god

so 3 asaro simple, 3 asaro classics, a few skulls in ballpoint, 3 riley rythms, and 5 nathan fowkes copies for line drawings. Might see if i can repeat tomorrow

Hey Fedodika loving all the hard work your putting in! In a couple of your drawings the proportions appear to be off, mainly the length from the bottom of the nose to the chin looks a tad too long, although it could just be the angle that I'm viewing it from.

Keep up the good work. :)

Just dropping in to say these look great! Don't forget to apply them from memory/imagination too, if you can fit that in! ; )

PAGE 69 WEEEW :)

Peter: Good point my man, the more i do these the more i can see those little mistakes; ya maybe my clumsy photography has some distortion, but eventually these will look right! thanks :)

Eristhe: Aww yer spoilin me hehe, well i wanna copy these correctly before i try and remember them you know "correct repetition" is what Jeff is getting at, and frankly i need to spend more time on a few of these.

Some good some bad, my mentor said i need to spend like 6 hours on one of these asaro heads! Hopefully i can get in a headspace where i can do that because the most i spent on one of these was like 2 hrs. im always curious of the value of like, making mistakes fast and fixing them there or longer efforts and fixing the mistakes in that session. I'm willing to work a lot, but at a high volume, i get anxious on more savory efforts because well the volume is lower. perhaps thats irrational if the goal is quality and essentially the same thing.

The profile view in that last post IMG 1442 is my attempt later in the day so its a bit more accurate than the first one imo, as i spent more time measuring it

Who knows, gonna start up jeff watts heads/2 because i at least want to see his thoughts and ya i know im not quite ready for it but i am just so curious! Will still be doing these exercises and hopefully get my own asaro head in the mail soon uuuh, cool!
