Fedodika the Koala
Hey there Fedo! Wow, the amount of work you are doing everyday is inspiring indeed! I have to piggyback on what's already been said, but I think putting some extra focus on just the drawing and structure of faces and anatomy would help a lot. Like maybe spend a few study days just drawing, no painting, and realllly take your time focusing on each part, the volume of each section, etc until you can do it from memory. Keep it uppp koalaman!

thx pnate :3 i've been doin that since last week, it's just so hard to resist the brush :O; cant be all bad hehe. Anyways, i made some huge goals for sketching but i feel if i shared the amounts it would just be all talk for now! In the meantime, here are some fun oil paintings i did with a pallete knife!

Great stuff, Mr. Koala! It's cool to see you've taken up traditional painting, also a bit of coincidence that you're working with a palette knife as I recently started experimenting with one myself. I'd say you're getting a good grasp on creating effective textures with the palette knife. I rather like the Mario painting, it vaguely reminds me of some of the paintings by Otto Dix. I guess it's the odd proportions, heh. Keep up the great work and experimentation!

Watch this on form stuff thingies, also draw something and make each pencil stroke follow the contour of the object. Vilppu once said "Imagine theres an ant crawling on the surface of the object" the key is to visualize that ant.

Those fruits are looking great, Mr. Koala! Also, is that Ed I see in those sketches in that other post?

Stardust: Thank you my beedle friend :O)! Yesh that is Ed, i've been studying lots of cartoon artists and learning much about simplification/gesture/shapes/composition/expression... I really recommend it but then again, a lot of people say that about the things they do, and i'm no art hero so take that with a grain of sugar ;)

a billion Paul richards studies later, i'm starting on armor now and hopefully will get that in the ol library then i'll go back to figures or something lel; i may draw cartoons/realistic inconsistently but i'll just embrace it i'm tired of bein so binary with things

The lines are looking better. Just take your time with them and keep the form in mind. Your cylinders are looking a bit flat. It helps to make a new layer and mannequinize the figure the way Proko does in his videos. And I dont know if you saw but the new Crimson Revolver is about dreams! I figured you'd be interested :)

Adam: thanks very much for the crit! i was thinking about it today, while working on this concept and how flat a lot of the details kinda came out. I was doing a lot of drawing today like of cups and things really learning a lot of new things. Anyways, i'm gonna enter this in the challenge, and will render it bunch for the hell of it! So much stuff to learn... but i gotta few things down which is a start!

This dude came from a dream see, you know how things change in dreams? Well, imagine the camera, just on the booty right, up close. I'm like ohhhh that's cute girl's butt ooohhh, then it like backs up and this bow legged knight is standing there in a desert, so Idk haha. I woke up had to right it down. He seems like a runner and he just want you to accept that his junk does not need protection!

Hey Koalaman. This is the first time I've visited your sb. Some really nice improvement going on.

I really like your still life studies, keep those going. I feel that more of an emphasis on the balance between lost and found edges could help you, and brushstrokes could do with a bit of variety, things seem to look quite smooth and airbrushed. Also, definitely try finish something all the way and past it every so often. Aim for a folio piece at times. Yes it might end up crap, but it's one crap folio piece more than none!

It is often said the best of a piece comes out in the last 10% of your time on it, when you are totally over it, and want to curse it with a pox and sterility. It's true. Pushing through gets you past your comfort zone. Push past your comfort zone man.

Also no life drawings or gestures? Don't let that slide if characters are your focus.

Keep it up!

Yay a crit! well i agree with you on pretty much everything, the only thing i'll explain myself for it
the gestures and life drawings; this first thing is everything i drew since like march 6th i think. I try to do
about 20 sheets a day of like 24 hands, figures, design of some sort, and stylization. that does equal a ton
of papers and i just don't feel like shooting them, so i try to just apply it to something!

I may take a pic of them if i feel they are worth looking at, and beyond just scribbles... maybe not the
best idea ehheh

I'll try to finish something more, i just get to a point where i don't know what else to do, but i will give it
a try on a piece soon!

In other news geez i'm really frustrated today! I need to eat some chilled mangoes and take a koala nap or something; maybe watch some bob ross!

so im really gonna take amits advice and get outta the comfort zone! i used to do it alot but idk i just settled into... a comfort zone hehe.

I'm gonna try and push this kinda fish eye lens background composition for one of my original characters. I like the pose i came up when i was applying my studies today which are attatched here. If y'all have any suggestions and recommendations for the composition, i'd really appreciate it; i want to have at least one portfolio piece, or whatever that means.

The sketch attatched is her face, and i was pretty happy with it, and the wierd texture thing is what the sword she's holding will have but much darker and grosser hopefully! man sketching these figures with volume instead of just line was really eye opening... They felt so much more fun to do or something!

Awesome man. The comp works ok. Maybe you could try angling the sword more towards the other corner (across her body) to really push that diagonal flow. Experiment with it anyway. Also feel you could use some background shapes to help make it a little less symmetric at the top, but it's not too bad really. Watch her hand size..massive.

About the face sketch, one thing to watch out for and I think will help you push a whole bunch of skills at once, is to think about facial expression and emotion. So often we see awesomely rendered images with just dead pan expressions. Boring! Once you get over the technical hurdles, you start to think about what the heck is the point of painting unless you are getting across some emotion. If you can start working on that now, it will totally help down the line.

Also I hope you use your recent hair studies and application to this!
:) Push it!

Thanks so much for the help Amit! I like the comp and stuff so much i'm scared to start adding the line drawing
and stuff; but i'm slowly getting into it;Yes, gonna have super flowy hair and kind of an evening scene on
the rocks, but i wanna go for really tight values that i have to slowly introduce. I will make her a bit more
expressive, thanks for mentioning that. I just see all those guys getting portfolio reviews and ask, Why is
everyone screaming? I don't have enough people screaming! I don't even have a portfolio! LETS CHANGE THAT!!

had to do some babysitting today, but i got my studies in i will try to focus more on this tomorrow!
